Cannot speak for a beginner book spanning the 20th century, but if you have a favorite player from the 20th century (first half of the 20th century would be best for a beginner), like Capablanca, Alekhine, Lasker, etc, you could get the book on that player in the Move by Move series, like Lasker - Move by Move or Capablanca - Move by Move.

Garry Kasparov's "My Great Predecessors" volumes 1 through 4.  Skip the computer dump annotations and just read it for the history.

Another great option is Andy Soltis's "Soviet Chess 1917-1991".

I’ve gotten most of my chess history from agadmator but just researching top known players from the 20th century is enough. A lot of Wikipedia pages provide so much free information.
