The current Chavet sets are so unbelievably bad it's comical. Enjoy the photos.

Modern Chavet is a garbage product on the same level as mass produced chess sets from a factory. Made by hand with machinery in an assembly line fashion. Made by hand without any regard to quality, consistency, or pride in workmanship. Keep that in mind if you decide to gamble and order a set online. Only then will you not be dissapointed.

Glue is also a natural product. Applied and assembled by hand. I guess that's the reason why 14 of the 32 pieces arrived with loose rattling weights.

my chavet size 5 all 32 pieces were loose wink.png

Not sure about their traditions. Maybe they do not use any glue and the loose style of "rattling" weights is just a wanted effect of authenticity ? Pretty all "US club" plastic pieces (all made in china) are not better glued, most of them I purchased (US vendors) are doing the same, just a bit more toxic  wink.png

btw, varientes has no 5 back in stock

Pawnerai with no regards ahahah.

I own a Modern Chavet set. So I can personally and honestly, whole-heartedly laugh at it. Mock it. And love it at the same time. I compare Modern Chavet to an ugly, lazy, smelly, 3-legged pet dog. I would still love the dog with all its faults. I would never discard or abandon it. But the facts remain, the dog is ugly, lazy, smelly and has 3 legs.

What else can you do but laugh and love.

TheOneCalledMichael: no idea about the N°6, maybe they prefer to serve "France first" happy.png

(Certainly some resellers might still have some old stock, as n°5. )

That's wholesome, I think that they're lucky to have you as their owner.

True, despite everything it's the swirly grains and the beautiful horsie that makes me love my Chavet.

... and even a "3-legged-dog" can run pretty fast and still hunt.

Guess these sets are made just for simple playing, rather than for showcase or collecting.

Agreed. I keep my Chavet No.5 weighted/felted set in a simple zipper pouch. No soft cushion pillow bed here. Hah!

For those who are in love with this set even with leaning bishops, mutilated knights, Pisa towers and dogs with only 3 legs :

So sorry you got stung- but wow that board is beautiful.

Thanks. Yes, Drueke made some incredible bulletproof boards. I don't know what deal with the Devil they made, but it's amazing how this 15 year old solid wood board is still so flat and smooth it actually causes a suction effect with the table when I pick it up to put it away. Hah!

15 years old? Bah... it's hardly broken in yet. This is what my battle scared Drueke board purchased in the early 70's looks like after it's aged a bit. Still 'flat as a board'

@Pawnerai, did you ever re-glue the loose weights? If so, did you manage to take any photos of the process and was it terribly difficult? Thanks.

It's on the list of things to do. Out of the 32 garbage Chavet pieces, there are still about 10 of them stubbornly holding on. I'd like to do all of them at once. I might have to yank the stragglers out like a demented dentist. I hear 2-part epoxy is the way to go.

Wrong color square in the right hand corner - clearly defective.

I've had some sets where the weights are loose but won't come out, and I've fixed them by removing the baize, then applying low viscosity super glue around the weight, tapping the weight to help the superglue to sink in. I'd then keep the piece upside down for a few minutes while the glue sets.

Not sure if this has been answered, but did you ever hear back from the seller and/or the maker?

I naturally find Chavet sets ugly to begin with, but those knots are hideous. A rustic set indeed. Glad you are approaching it with humor!

Yes. It took me 4-5 emails, detailed photos, and Google Translate over 2 months during Christmas, Queens Gambit mania, and Covid slowdown shutdown to get replacement pieces shipped to me here in the US from France. I don't recommend anyone to purchase a modern Chavet set. If I had to do it all over again, I would not have purchased the set.

I couldn't find one detailed posting, or thorough article of the garbage quality modern Chavet has become. So I posted about my experience to let others know. Hopefully it saves them aggravation.

@Pawnerai could you please tell me where you bought these from? I know it sounds crazy, but I'd like to buy a set from them! I have one that looks identical and would like another!
