That knight seems to be very happy... funny face

It seems the ChessBazaar set was based on the Kadun set:

They should have stayed with the original. The older knight looks a whole lot better. I agree with you, szociofoto: that CB knight has a funny face.

I also have one of them.

Not sure about that knight, really ... It is so far from the original...

@Upcountryrain   yes I see that is what CB copied but then why do the set up nicely and change the knight? Do they like to change every knight they try to copy ie: 1849 and this set. They would have nailed it if they kept the original knight I agree with you. Why do they do this?

I don't know, wiscmike, and I can't figure it out. You have a running conversation with them. Why don't you ask them and also ask if it would be too late for them to change those goofy knights. Right up above are two examples of knights that would have been far better. scoziofoto's knights cut quite the profile.

Have you ever checked out Kadun's prices?

Yeah. That set is running at 280.00 US, and that's before shipping. I'm also guessing that the set is smaller than the CB offering. The CB set is priced at 150.00 with free shipping. But with that knight, I would opt for the other Russian set they just introduced at 199.00. (Or not.)

Sooo many sets to choose from. I did notice that you encouraged Official Staunton to offer Soviet/Russian sets. They seem like they'd be more inclined to stay true to the original.

Wow, if that's what Kadun is asking they've really come down on their prices from when I checked. Thanks for noticing. I think Official Staunton would do a very good job and offer very accurate reproductions, and I think there would be a real market for them.

When I checked on their site earlier today the set was priced at 17,300 rubles. Unless the currency converter is mistaken (or I am not working it properly) that's about 280.00 US. Yes, that is quite a drop from what it was a few months ago. Maybe about half?

Just noticed that CB has this set back in stock. But also visited kadun.ru again to have a look around. They are offering a variant to their set above, a retro 70s. Priced at 21,700 rubles (about 240US), the kings stand at 11cm and the set includes a folding board.

The Kadun set is awesome, and finally well-priced, even with the shipping.

I'd like nothing better than to own this myself. Alas! I've spent my allowance over the holidays. Get it while you can.

Of the Kadun sets which is better

retro 60s or 70s they both look nice.

Kram, I agree, they both look great. I prefer the 70 Retro, though. It's a more elegant design, you have an original now of the 60 Retro set, and Kadun's take on the set is really stunning.

Here's Yuri Averbakh with an original in this design...
