There is a difference between someone who plays in tournaments and a tournament player. When it comes to tournaments I want only one thing, to win. I could care less if it's because he blunders or receives word his mum just died.

Okay, story time again! I played at an American Open when I was a teen. First round I was paired with a Susan Mills. Fifteen moves into the game I had a winning position. So I took my eyes off the game and to her bra-less T-shirt. After eyeballing her chest for a bit, I noticed her hands, which were very masculine. Then I gave attention to her face, which had masculine features as well. While pondering all this rather than the game I soon blundered away my advantage and lost the game. When I gave the humiliating report to my friends that I had lost to a girl, not only was I laughed at, but was told she used to be Gary Mills. But it wasn't all bad, I won all the rest of my games and took first in my class.

no, its a difference of moral character, especially  if you care less that your oppenent's mother just died.

Context please. I didn't say I could care less that someone's mum died, I said I couldn't care less if I win a tournament game because someone receives word their mum died. Yeah I'd feel sorry for the person, but be glad I got a point in the win column.

Okay, story time! There's a great surf break between TJ and Ensenada. The owners had a campground there which had a large hand painted sign at the entrance. It read "No drinking, fighting, (a host of other things, can't recall them all), or other inmoral acts."

To wander back to the original question...I prefer the 2nd of the two pictured boards.  Just esthetics matter to me for home play.  I like the look of the slightly crowded board.  But I don't play blitz either.  :)

What's the rule for matching this set to the proper board size? I guess all 4 legs have to fit in the square right?

Avatar of Fugazy_Crapov

Re. the 4 inch collector, it looks great on 2.375 inch squares or a little larger but cramped on a 2.25 inch board. HOS never recommended 2.25 inch squares for the set on their website.

HOS also recommends 2.25 inch squares to 2.375 inch squares.

Yet for the 4" Capablanca set they recommend a minimum of 2.375" squares.

Sounds like someone made an error in the recommended board size for that Collector.

It all depends on what you're used to as the standard. I think these are Pioneer Club equipment. How many of those pawns can you fit in one square?

I suspect those pawns were using performance enhancing drugs...
