Try to use Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), easy to find and not toxic. I use it to remove dark stains in maple and it works pretty welI. I don't know any other method to light wood.

I would use that to lighten the stain?

Its main use is related to the removal of stains and discolorations caused by the passage of time and exposure to external elements, I'm not sure it can be good for dyed or stained wood, try in a non visible place of a piece or in a piece of stained wood you have to see first the final result
