I would recommend Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition. It is packed with features, including interactive training courses, almost any opening variation imaginable, a strong engine he can practice against etc. Also, the last time I checked, not terribly expensive either. 
Ubisoft made quite a large patch available as well (around 85mb if memory serves me correctly), so if your friend has access to the internet, the patch will download automatically when he runs the software for the first time.
Hi. I'm looking for a new year present for a friend of mine. He's a beginner and I don't really know much about modern training software. Can someone recommend me quality training packages?
He prefers to learn by practice and not too much into theory, so I figure some interactive exercises with theory will do.
Please offer something that can be bought on DVD. It's a present after all.
