Milliern, I posted some links to a version of it that is lighter weight made by another company called Sterling Games Single. The weight looks to be 1.4pounds for the whole set. While not nearly the same as ACE at least the pieces are very similar.

I ordered it myself and should have it on Monday so I can post more pictures and such and also weight of all the pieces.

I wish they weren't merely single weighted.  Undecided  I wonder how hard it is to add weights to them.

With regard to those pieces in your picture, did you purchase them through one of the links that g60madman supplied or elsewhere?

Here is the set from ebay I spoke of. I already took off the felts and they all have small holes that range from an 1 inch to 2 inches deep. I figure I could load them up with small bee bee pettles and then use my Wife's hot glue gun to set them into place. I was thinking of using a drill bit to open the hole a little wider based on the weights if some one post them. Here is an image of the white pieces and the hole.

Cool.  I have the lead slugs from my old set.

Nope, I bought this set maybe 15 years ago. I payed it +- 26$ at the time without shipping. I was charmed by the design and curious about the heavy weight. For years I left it in a cafe where I used to play (blitz) a lot. A year ago I was again interested in chess and was able to recover the set.

IMHO, the House of Staunton's plastic Collector Chess Set are better than the plastic Ultimate Chess Set.  If you really want the UCS then buy the wood version

The rooks in that set are particularly ugly.

After lots of drilling I was able to fill the King with hot glue and copper beebee pelets. I then put a nickel in the bottom to help keep it flat which added about 6 more grams. After all the work maybe 30 minutes or so, here is the outcome.

King Weight Before
1.2oz / 33g

King Weight After
2.1oz / 60g

It's clearly not the ACE set but it will have to do for now. It does feel a lot better than the orginal weight. Plus for $12.99 for the set, a 1 inch drill bit for $2.97 and 2.5 pounds of beebee's for roughly $6 bucks it's not to bad. Off to work on the next King.

Thanks for the update.  I think I'm going to opt to continue to glue my piece back together.  (My K recently cracked in half, but crazy glue worked okay.)  A friend has a 3D printer, and I'm thinking of asking him to try to make copies of my set.

So after some discussion with my Wife, she offered up using salt with the beebees to fill in the extra space. I was able to finish both Kings and also knocked out 6 pawns before stopping for the night as my drill died. I took the pawns from .5 ounces to .8 ounces. Not a huge gain but they feel a lot better none the less.

The plastic Ultimate Chess Set was a failed attempt to make the Reykjavik chess set.  The bulbous pawn finial was a mistake, along many of the other flawed abortion pieces.

Thanks,

Your lack of aesthetic taste, and further lack of any sensibility toward functionality, has been duly noted.

What I like about the Ultimate set:

  • It's damn near indestructible (not made out of cheap brittle plastic that chips and cracks).
  • Prefer the cream color to the antiseptic-white color of most plastic sets.
  • Nicely weighted. My set weighs in at 52 oz.
  • Best fits on a 2" (not a 2.25") chess board. Good luck trying to find a 2" vinyl board (in the USA).

What I'd change:

  • Pawns are slightly undersized. Should be taller and wider.
  • Extra queens (coming in new edition).
  • Available in another color besides black (brown, tan, burgundy, red)
  • Knights could be more equine looking. Something like this on the left, rather than the kinda-looks-like-a-horse (if you squint) design on the right.

The Drueke knight is patented, it is what makes a Drueke set a Drueke set, it will not be changed

But the Ultimate isn't a Drueke set. Was and will be sold by American Chess Equipment.

I'm not sure what the rules are here, but incase anyone is interested, I have x4 new Ultimate Chess Sets with Double Queens. They are still in their original plastic, sealed bags. Never opened and never used. They are 4 lb sets.  (I liked them so much I had originally bought x6 sets back in 2008 I believe).  They are marked with the number 2102 on their original white carboard boxes. PM me if you are interested in buying them and I can send pictures of them in their bags.

What online marketplace are you selling them through?

Chessman2b_Old

Hi Milliern

I will sell them for 30.00 plus shipping using paypal.   I don't have them listed online. I do have accounts at ebay and amazon that I could sell them through, and I'm willing to, I'd just need to add the fee's they charge to the total cost.  (Last time I checked it was 10% + listing fee I believe that Ebay charges. I sold  a few new copies of Fritz 15 on Amazon and for the 47.95 I charged, the fees (not including shipping) were 8.95 (so I'm assuming the fee's would be 6 or 7 dollars on a 30.00 item, not sure).  Amazon is nice because as a seller I can print off shipping labels right from the account. So I could either sell directly or through one of those two for a higher cost...
