Ultimate chess set

The best chess sets come from the USSR in the fifties and sixties...they are one thing of beauty all the way...Those Russians could do it ...

A few weeks ago I bought a Raleigh hybrid bike on a great Amazon open-box deal ($228!). I selected the Tan color, which displayed as a lovely creamy buff on the web page, but when the bike arrived, the Tan color had a noticeable olive-green cast.

Which was OK but I would have preferred the color I saw on the Amazon page.

I sure hope that the ivory version is the next line of production for the Ultimate chess set. It's a can't miss classic color combo. It would have been a cool option if both were available from the initial production orders. I will obtain the ivory version once it is made, so what if it's the same color as other sets on the market. As far as my objectives it's the quality plastic material and weight composition of the pieces that counts and this set seems to check off all those boxes except for color for some but I'm ok with the initial offering. Waiting patiently as everyone  for the arrival of this setnullnullnull.

Hmmm... you may have churned up something there.

Guess that is what you get when you "agitate" the pieces.

You can always butter up your opponent before sneaking in for the kill.

Ok, last one might be reaching... :-)  Don't know any butter jokes.

I like the offering you are putting forth in this color but if the white is very expensive to manufacture then go forth with the plans as scheduled. One question those green vinyl roll up chessboards that the new sets are displayed on are they available for sale on your American Chess equipment website? I had seen a green and white vinyl board but it had squares slightly smaller than 2 inches. Is this 17" board the same as in the pictures you had displayed both colors of the new Ultimates on, or is there a larger playing square model? This same exact board in this picture is the one I'm referring to, what would be this item #? Any help would be appreciated Mr. Lohrman thank you.

Shelby - I understand and agree with your perspective on pure white sets.  While there is certainly nothing "wrong" with a white set, it is true that everyone makes them - there is nothing particularly compelling or unique about the color.  So differentiating your product via color may be a viable marketing strategy.

On the other hand, from the posts on this forum, it is clear that the strong yellow color (of the "white" pieces) of the "new" Ultimate Chess  Set - as evidenced by the photos you have posted on this forum - is not very appealing to a significant percentage potential customers.   So I suggest it might be wise to rethink the color issue in the future.

That is, perhaps you could consider taking a middle approach (i.e., not too white and not too yellow) to produce a set with what is generally referred to as a "natural" color.  Or at least mitigate the intensity of the yellow of the new set.  I think a natural color would be satisfactory to the largest majority of potential customers.  See my post # 250 for what I mean by natural color, i.e....

Personally, I don't like white sets.  I'd rather them be even more yellow than the ivory white.  Too many boards have very light colored squares and the white pieces don't stand out from them well enough for me.  Just as bad as a board with pure black squares and black pieces.  I don't know why anyone would want to use that.

Looks like the factory did an amazing job with the pieces but wasn't even close with the color. That is as yellow as it gets. Very unfortunate.

That being said I appreciate all of the hard work Shelby put into this and obviously understand his desire to get this to market as soon as possible. Who knows how long it would've taken to go back and forth on color with the manufacturer.

 Shelby,

It's not noted on your website, but what are the diameters of the king and the pawn? My vintage Ultimate set measures Kd=1.57" and Pd=1.13", which best fits a 2" board where the king occupies 78.5% the width of the square. On a standard 2.25" tournament board the king occupies only 69.5% of the square, which is off-spec for both USCF and FIDE regulations.

My whole point is this, whatever the diameter of the king is, make sure you match it with the appropriately sized board. A good suit not only has to look good, it has to fit well too.

I guess the set will be still be good travel/knockaround blitz set regardless.  Just unfortunate the color came out such a loud yellow, won't be able to leave it out in the living room (well I could but would be subsequently murdered by my gf).  Looking forward to next year when your manufacturer gets the color right.

Thanks for all of the hard work and perseverance on this.

Bill,

You must not have been keeping up with the forum.  The color WILL NOT be the yellow from the first picture.  It will be as close to the original color as possible.  It will be cream.  I doubt anyone will be able to tell the difference other than the difference in size and weight.  If you liked the old color...you will like the color on this set.

thanks

Couldn't agree more. I like the butter color myself. Precisely why I like playing with green squares if it involves jet black pieces.

I'm looking forward to receiving my new and better Ultimate Pieces...

What made me first stop and take notice of the set?  Those stout pawns!  Other pawns are just wimps in comparison.  :-)

I like pieces designed with wider bases, they typically result in a lower center of gravity and are less likely to topple over when swiftly moved and dropped awkwardly off kilter, reliably taking foot on the intended square and wobbling to a fixed stance with a mighty clap of thunder (BAM!).   hmm... or is it Emerald Lagasse kicking it up a notch I'm thinking of... never mind, I'm on a roll here.  Speaking of roll, this is making me hungry, someone pass the butter... oh forget it. :-)

I just want to make sure all of you realize how hard it is to bring something like this back to the market.

"cue the violins"

ACE is constantly striving to bring out high quality items that people want.  It is not a cheap endeavor to bring something like this to market.  You are talking CAD Drawings,  Mold Charges,  sample fees,  and most of all unit costs per items with huge minimums.  This is not chump change.

We value your opinions,  after all you are the end people who are buying the product.  One of the main reasons everyone enjoyed the Ultimate chess set was the great design and to a small part the color.  The color was one of the things that made this set different from everything else.  Hard for people to steal one of your chess pieces to replace one of their own unless they own this set.

If I do a white set this one will just blend in with the rest of the weighted sets on the market.  If I do that I will anger many of the purists that love the set for what it was.  I even went as far as to ask some of the largest chess distributors out there what they think.  Their agreement was I should stick with the original color.  When I have the people that are buying 80% of the sets telling me one thing it is hard to disagree with them.

So,  here is my enigma wrapped in a puzzle,  surrounded by a Gordian knot.  Is it even possible to keep everyone happy?  The yellow/cream was the original color of the set.  It will cost me a fortune to make white ones now.  Should I even make white ones?  It would be like painting a Ferrari white.
Kendari,  I love you and your input,  but I am of the mindset now that making the set in white would hurt the image of the set.  Stick with me on this.  EVERYTHING in our industry is white, right?  95% of the plastic chess sets out there are white.  Think about when you first viewed the Ultimate.  The first thing that caught your eye was the color.  It was only after the color drew you over that you took the time to see the quality of the set.  It was then you noticed the weighting system,  the lack of seams,  the thick felt on the bases,  and the design of the set.

I don't know..maybe I am just a purist.  I would love to get your opinions.  I just want to put out the best,  highest quality products I can.

Happy Holidays!

I think you're misunderstanding the consensus.  The original cream is the holy grail...white is lesser of 2 evils (between butter yellow and the ivory white prototype color).  I understand this is already done but we all totally understand how difficult and drawn out this process has been.  That being said doing all that hard work on the molds appears to be for naught when the manufacturer comes back with the wrong color and you sign off on it.

But anyway its done just wanted to clear up the disconnect.

Why not wait till you get the sets in your hands. Pictures always have a tendency to distort the true color.  I have been through this with scanners, how cameras work I have no idea but I know they have different color settings for different pictures.   Remember any older Ultimate set you have would probably be somewhat faded.  I know Shelby has a winner here. Heavily weighted but no lead is a miracle in itself.

They are already in production so if the color has to be tweaked for the next time I am sure he will take that into consideration, but I have a feeling he has a winner here and the first run will be sold out soon enough.

Just my opinion.
