Ultimate chess set

I'd check with Shelby. I used to live in the UK, and now Canada. I regularly get things shipped from USA to here, from UK to here, and in the past USA to UK. USA postal rates are generally a bargain compared to many places.
I often get large bike parts sent from Germany to Canada for was less than it would cost me to ship anything within Canada. Same shipping from the USA to canada, often cheaper than within canada.

Devastated in live in England where quality plastic sets are as common as hens teeth.

Looks like this place has a few good sets at a reasonable price.

@theendgame3, If you still don't have a good plastic set by the time my wife and I come to Great Britain for a vacation (2023 at the latest), I will bring it over in my suitcase and we'll get it to you somehow. I'm sure you'll have one inside of 2 years, but if not, I'll do what I can.

I see all the wooden versions are sold out. Had been hoping to pick up an acacia set as a gift but hesitated as they were “Fischer” branded, which I knew the recipient would dislike. You snooze you lose I guess. I’d been looking for another coffer to deliver them in. Will more be reproduced?

Are the "Bobby Fischer Ultimate Chess Pieces " advertised in AMC the new "Ultimate Chess Pieces " in the new color (ie not yellow)? Or should are they yet to be listed on the website?

Yes the Bobby Fischer Ultimate Chess Pieces are the new off white version. It is listed and you can place an order. Shelby said that they should arrive this week or maybe next week.

Even though they have nothing to do with Bobby Fischer.

Since Shelby paid for the license to the name. He is going to use it on products that have nothing to do with Bobby Fischer. It's only for marketing and nothing more really.

It is what it is. Actually Bobby was shameful himself before he passed away. He was an awesome player but a real jacka$$ as a person.

In all fairness to Shelby, the Ultimate set does show more than a passing resemblance to the Reykjavik set (CB version shown below) used in the 1972 Fischer-Spassy match. The king, queen, bishop, and rook are very close. The knight and pawn less so. For me, that's close enough for government work! So I won't cringe if Bobby's name is on the box.

I just want the ultimate chess set. I don’t want or give a crap if anyone famous endorses it. Waste of money to pay money to license it.

You must be new here.  The guy who makes this set gets distracted very easily and will spend 95% of his focus on some dumb ancillary "improvement" to the set while inadvertently making some catastrophic fundamental error resulting in the white pieces coming out as bright piss  yellow.  So yea you might be disappointed that your ultimate set reissue has bright purple mermaids instead of knights but hey at least they're now called the Bobby Fischer Ultimate Set!  And don't complain because it was a lot of work securing that licensing deal.

@mikecantreed1, considering that several hundred messages ago you said you were done with this thread and this set, I’m surprised you are still putting it down. Shelby tried to do everything you asked for, and you are still whining. Get a life. The color is set, the weights, while not totally encapsulated, are set into the plastic so they won’t come loose. It would be within his right not to sell you one if you ever bothered to order it.

Looks like we've got a few whiz-ards among us who aren't happy unless they're pissing on something or someone. Miscreants from the Urine Nation.

Omg Lou ,

That isn’t the genuine ripoff pic of Calvin that you used.

Have you no shame?!

I couldn't get the rights for Calvin so I had to use a stand-in, I mean, a piss-in.

Just pre ordered- thanks Shelby!

Hi Shelby, The 200 sets should be here in a couple of weeks, and so looking forward to receiving my sets so I can send one out to my grandkids.  When you reach the milestone of 200 sets pre-sold please post it. I bet you sell over 500 sets by 12/31/2020. I have been told that sets are selling at a rapid pace since the Queens Gambit Netflix Series came out.

I recognize that Mr. Lohrman has put a great deal of time and effort into updating the ultimate set, and I am grateful for that and have ordered a plastic one. I’m interested in the wooden versions as well, as I was intending to give a few as gifts, but I also know that each of the recipients, in this particular case, would take offense to receiving a set with Fischer’s name on it, due to his expressed political point of view.

Some folks don’t so easily compartmentalize.

I inquired directly if they’d be available without the Fischer branding, but unfortunately that is not the case. This of course leaves me in a quandary as to whether to move ahead with the purchase and find another suitable coffer or to move on. I’d be grateful for any ideas regarding alternate coffers that are relatively inexpensive that any of you may have.

Bobby Fischer's comments were no doubt reprehensible.  But I also believe that there was some sort of mental illness going on with him.  I'm not saying that's an excuse for his comments but I am saying that it is important to consider all of the factors.

Think about all of the artwork in museums throughout the world that was done by people who may not have been admirable people aside from their artistic talents.  Admiring Bobby's chess games and what he meant overall to the game of chess does not mean that someone endorses everything that ever came out of his mouth.

If I worried about every musician that I listen to in terms of how they lived their personal lives then I'd probably have to throw out half my music collection.  Chuck Berry was an a-hole but that doesn't mean Johnny B. Goode shouldn't be played on the radio.
