To be honest I do not think you can make the Ultimate set any better.  You might have differences of opinion on color and looks, but the build and the way it handles are great and the new weighting system is unique and the best.

MIke,

Getting back to the original color would be an improvement.

That's what I mean Lou many opinions on color. Many want to see a red and white set like the old Drueke colors. But you know you have to do a large run to bring down the cost. I am sure no other color will happen till he runs low on these, once again as he did with the butter set. Different strokes for different folks.

I can think of some ways to improve it.  Pretty much all plastic chess sets even this one use low grade cheap plastic.

Use high quality high impact plastic.  If you use disinfectant wipes you will dissolve the plastic. I found that out the hard  way.   No mould  lines would be nice. . The knight looks like a statue that has been smoothed down with erosion over thousands of years.  Knight lacks detail. Heavier weights would be an improvement,  along with plastic covering the bottom too. Better felt that actually goes edge to edge.
I like the white color now and the matte finish is unusual for plastic chess pieces I think. I know these improvements cost money, but this is not a set penny  pinchers  would get anyways.

I don't see why some people use of the term "appliance white" to describe the color. It looks "ivory" to me. Appliance white is a cold blue-ish white. These are a warm off-white.

I gotta say I am indeed confused by the color. I've seen white pieces as white as the white squares on that mousepad placemats but this white what mr Sound is showing looks okay to me.

Mr. Lohrman,

I have no real complaints about my set.  I just wanted to see those improvements fir the next generation set if there is going to be a future one.

TheOneCalledMichael

Ah thanks mister Sound! That looks okay to me for sure. It's not the natural tan color of the old version but this is acceptable.

The school requires disinfectant electrostatic spray to be used every day.  After a few days the plastic got sticky and soft. The school purchased another set for me and now won’t allow outside sets to be used. The school disposed of the old set so I don’t have it.
I have to ask. Who came up with the bright idea to have the top of the knight mane end in a pointy tip?  It pokes the palm of your hand when you move the piece. The shop teacher was nice enough to smooth it down for me. Other then this the new set was good.

The set looks great on the foldable PVC boards.  I'm really digging blue lately and these squares are nice and light allowing for good contrast with the black pieces.  And the light squares are more of the buff color that others have described---which I prefer to bright white squares.  And, of course, the Ultimates are a really nice set---super happy with them.

Nice set! I also have a PVC board, but can’t afford the Ultimate chess set, so I have a cheaper (still quite nice) set of weighted plastic pieces. I think the king is around 3.5 inches, maybe 3 5/8.

This is all BS.  If the kid is really writing this, he really needs a life education.  If it is an adult, like a relative, he needs to get a life.  There appears to be no good purpose to these complaints.  This guy should have his account banned, no matter what.

Catfishing is sadly a real "thing" online. There are many people out there who are unfortunately unwell.

BrainFood101010

Eyechess you want me banned for no good reason. You are a straight up  A hole jerk.
American chess:

I never said I live in NY. I never said the  middle school   bought any of these chess sets.  They replaced it.  The sprayer thing was made by 3M if that helps.
we are not allowed to bring in personal chess sets till the pandemic is officially over.

BrainFood101010

The chess  set was a birthday gift. The school would never buy anything  nice for chess club. They only buy cheap unweighted sets.
We are allowed to bring in our own sets because it makes the game more enjoyable.
The disinfectant spray damages some plastics. So the school was willing to pay my parents back to buy a new set. So I got a new set.  What do I need you for.? The set was replaced.  In the end it didn’t cost me anything  so I don’t really care how it gets replaced.   All I cared about is that I got a new set. I don’t really care if the school had payed  for it.   To me it was just an inconvenience and all I wanted was a new set and I got it.  Maybe you should stop sniffing glue.

BrainFood101010

We are no longer allowed to bring in personal sets because they spray the disinfectant. We have to use the sets the school supplies now. So even if you gave me a set for the school it would only get ruined by the spray disinfectant.

Bronco

What is the best sized squares for this set?

@sound67 I like your board. Is it a mousepad?

Bronco

 Very nice.

I found lou’s posts on #1089 & #1091 about square sizes. Thanks Lou.

TheBaconEater

I agree with Shelby, these claims of  dissolving plastics is a load of BS. I wipe mine down with disinfectant  wipes and I Lysol them, A LOT, between lessons and they are the same as when they were bought. Plus, the whole shift to “I hurt my hands when I gorilla paw the Knights” was a tell we’re dealing with a kid. What adult would do that?

SybotCB

I don't believe the disinfectant spray thing for a minute without something else to back it up.  I almost think you'd have to soak them in it overnight to see the plastic soften if it would at all.

But to be fair: I'm an adult and I love the Ultimates.  (I've bought 6 sets for my club in the last year) And honestly, the knights are a little sharp on the top.  I took a file to it just a bit.  When you're playing blitz and grabbing fast, sometimes it'll catch ya.

I was going back in the thread looking for a photo and stumbled upon the above old cringy post. It was a literal LOL moment.
