Hi Lou, Great calculation of the Dubrovnik set. After using the CB chat, when I asked about the size, the answer given to me was a 3.75" King. The launch date is in October.

It's a shame to see a business shutting down. thechesspiece.com used to be the leaders of chess industry in the last decade, however, of what I've observed is that they never tried to update themselves. If I'm not wrong, they haven't updated their website since 2010.

On the contrary, HOS and chesshouse has beautifully countered the onslaught of Indian businesses. It would be better for Steve to sell off his business rather than shutting it down. But everyone has its own priorities. My best wishes with Steve!

There nothing new, just history repeating it's self ! why not get a piece of the pie !

As there say in the USA .

Lardy was an important french chess piece manufacturer, founded in 1890 in Dortan near Oyonnax in the French Jura, which closed shop in 1992. In the interwar years and even more in the 50ies and 60ies Lardy must have exported very large numbers of chess sets to the major market USA and England, where they were commercialized by games brands such as Cavalier, Drueke, Lowe,Sterling and others, as well as to smaller markets. This very likely contributed to forcing local makers like Drueke or Horn or other makers in the USA and Jaques in England to stop or reduce making quality wooden chess pieces.

Lardy was not the only french chess piece maker to flood the world with down to middle market chess sets - Chavet and others spring to mind. Their success in export markets like the USA, Great Britain and Germany heralded the arrival of the ascendent Indian manufacturers who in turn started to take away Lardy's market from them in the 60ies and 70ies.

OK effort. The undercut bases look a bit overdone to me when compared to FC comparison to actual Dubrovnik on Chess Antiques. HOS version looks a lot closer to the original going by the pictures.

I like the new knight a lot more. Too bad I got the 2.0 already not too long ago. I don't like the current colorways though. Sheesham is not enough contrast to dark squares and crimson red....I would prefer black OR better quality rosewood.

Hope there will be other coming soon projects. The ugly knights from the Latvian set could use an update

Your choice of which 1950 Dubrovnik set to buy will have factor in what size chessboard you intend to use.

The new CB 1950 Dubrovnik version 3.0 (perhaps they're hoping that the 3rd time's a charm!), like the Noj 1950 set, is designed to play on a 2" chessboard (the CB king covers less than 68% of a 2.25" square).

Since I prefer the 1950 Dubrovnik on a 2.25" board, I choose to go with the SC version, which I find to be a more accurate reproduction and over a pound heavier. I have provided dimension tables on both the SC and CB sets for comparison. CB specs are from their website, SC specs are as measured. Both sets are well-scaled when played on the appropriate size chessboard as listed below.

Well, the original Dubrovnik 1950 chess set was designed for, and came with a, 60mm square sized board. That's square size of 2.36 inches.

@loubalch Why are keep spamming those 'rules' everywhere? They are also a bit untrue compared to practice. The standard DGT set you are is being used at super GM tournaments have smaller ratio's. The king is more close to 68-72% and pawns are so narrow you can easily fit four in a square. The same is true for European tournaments and chess clubs where you don't have to provide your own set.

I know your 'rules' are based on FIDE guidelines but as practice shows; even FIDE herself doesn't practice what she preaches. Are you obsessed with these 'rules'?

I had the Dubrovnik 2.0 on 55mm squares and it looked way too cramped for me because of the fat pawns. Now I have them on 60mm squares and it looks perfect.

If you look at old Soviet photo's it looks like they on the other hand like a more cramped setup.

In the end it is a matter of taste.

I don't know. I guess it's a much-needed improvement over what they were offering before. It looks similar to the one Camaratta has on his chess antiques website, except worse, design wise. I don't like the undercut bases, bishop's heads (too chunky) and still the knight is just not quite there. If I didn't have my Noj sets and I wanted to have a dubrovnik set, I'd have picked the Camaratta one. They did a great job on that one.

They're not rules, merely suggestions. And I completely agree, it's a matter of taste. My premise was that the dimensions of the pawns are equally as important as the dimensions of the king when selecting a set and sizing it to a chessboard. The system was never intended to be etched in stone as the 11th Commandment, but merely an easy to use 'rule of thumb' for those who find it useful.

@sound67 Okay well at least at the Tata Steel Amateur chess event at Wijk aan Zee and other tournaments/clubs in the Netherlands the ratio's are small and pieces have a lot of air/room.
