Hi, I cannot tell you anything about its value, but I can say that we had a wooden version growing up - I learnt and played chess on it for over a decade, and it has left warm and happy memories. The 8 different hand carved pawns and the wonderful king and queen and the bishops with beards - I can picture the pieces and board now, today, as clear as daylight! Ours did not have pictures on white squares, though.
Would be nice to see more detailed pictures of this version of the set! It is Chinese - have seen some for sale on eBay (the wooden ones) - not too expensive, around the €100 mark, if I remember correctly.
Only thing I know is made from soapstone
Thanks kieran
