Hello, I am new to chess, and wish to buy a good robust digital clock that will last, and have features that I can grown into as I become more experienced and wish to play a variety of games types. The VeTek 300 is out of stock at all regular dealers, and three emails and a voice mail directly to Visual-Tek the manufacturer of the VeTek 300 have not been returned (poor customer service) ….. are these warning signs that perhaps I should look at other suitable clocks with a better customer focus?

I would contact Shelby of American Chess Equipment.  He is the one that designed this clock with the Visual Tek people manufacturing it.

If you want a different clock I would suggest the DGT 3000.  It is a very good clock.  I would buy one from The Chess House.

Hello Eyechess, thank you for replying so quick. Shelby has no stock anticipated for 2+ months, same apparently with The Chess House. I look at the features and benefits of the DGT 3000 verses the VeTek 300.

You can get the DGT 3000 Limited Edition from Amazon for $60 USD:

They also have the regular DGT 3000 for $4 less, but I like the fake wood look myself.

Great idea. I will likely buy that. Thanks.

@Eyechess knows chess clocks.

In a separate thread, Shelby mentioned that they are preparing a new firmware for the VTek300 to support the new time controls in tournament play. I intend to send in my clock for an update when it's ready.

Strange. The ACE website shows the Blue VTek300 as in stock. The Black and White are OOS. The good thing about the DGT3000 is that since it's such a popular model, virtually everyone knows how to set it and troubleshoot any problems. Can't go wrong with either clock.

Shelby is not particularly punctual when it comes to managing his website.  Perhaps, due in part to his travels to tournaments, etc.

The Advanced Chess Clock from wholesalechess has been great for me. I personally find it hard for me to justify purchasing a chess clock that is close to or at the $100 range. It's only purpose is to keep time. It shouldn't cost nearly $100 to do it. Most clocks today have common tournament time controls already in them. If a tournament does do a weird time control that is not common. It still doesn't mean that I should get a high dollar clock. This is my personal opinion on chess clocks. Get what works best for you and your budget.

I had a Wholesale Chess Advanced clock.  It cost less than $30.00.  It was fine.  I ended up gifting it to a local high schooler and he used it until the pandemic.

For the money, I think the DGT3000 has the biggest bang.  Amazon has it for $54.00, $60.00 for the imitation wood version.
