I am a big fan of the book Through the Looking Glass. I have even been to the rooms at Oxford where the author wrote the novel! I am looking to get an attractive chess board to go with my red and white pieces, just like in the story about Alice.
QUESTION: What colors would the squares likely be and what material would the board be made from in Victorian England, in the late 1860s, to go with red and white pieces?
I would very much appreciate some expert opinions.
Have you seen the old Victorian leather boards, folding, burgundy/wine coloured squares with light squares of an off white cream colour. Almost as delicious as Cindy Crawford 😋😋.
