Walnut and ash end grain chess board

Hi all. Just though I'd share my completed custom boards I've been working on over the last month. 42.5mm squares, hand engraved letters and numbers, and finished with three coats of danish oil. It was my third and fourth attempt after two fails ha. By no means perfect but I'm very satisfied with the end result.

Anyone else any homemade boards to share?

Wow! Looks amazing, @YakBert!

Thanks K_Simonson, appreciate it. Just need some nice pieces for it, have considered making my own but that's maybe a little too much out of my skill ha.

Cheers Sound67 it was just a small electric engraver, not the best tool for it but came up alright.

Not sure how to reply to each of you individually so one message will do ha

Thank you Theendgame3.

Glad you think they are JHQ18, cheers. Not by a long stretch, heaps of rookie errors... a bit like my chess games haha.

and again argh. Fake_ideal I don't think I could make a decent enough set ha. I was considering buying a wood lathe, but I decided to make my first purchase of pieces from royal chess mall instead. Can't wait to get them

Ok cool. Post some pictures when they show up, I'll be interested to see how they look. Which of the two boards do you prefer?

Avatar of YakBert

Will do Fake. They should arrive on Monday. Definitely the walnut border one, I think the ash inlay just makes it pop

Avatar of YakBert

dam ha. sorry using my phone and keep hitting send. but the grain on the ash border one is just stunning, I did have to fill in two mitre joints because the board wasn't square which spoils it a bit

How many hours did you invest in making them?

I like both. You’re right about the inlay on the walnut board.

Are they the both same thickness?
Avatar of YakBert

Cheers Sathishksekar :). @Fake, I can't seem to start new paragraphs, so excuse everything being huddled together ha. At a guess I would say four working weeks to make both, I could be well off either way though ha that's including the 24hours for each glue up stage. Both are 30mm deep, which I think is a decent size, could have went smaller and got more boards out of it. and I'm working on one more from the timber batch, 57.5mm squares, its bloody huge ha, but I've really messed the squares up so it'll need to be a wood putty touch up after they're glued ha

Time well spent I’d say.

I think you made the right choice with depth, give them some heft, some seriousness, as opposed to making more ‘flimsier’ boards. Quality over quantity.

Do you work with wood by trade? So many questions! Sorry... hahah

btw have you thought of adding cool designs to the pieces and changing to magnetic board

@YakBert have the pieces arrived yet?
