Well.. I've done it (pulled the trigger on a World Chess Studio folding board)

As I've alluded to here in the past, I've been wanting a reduced size (torn between 1.5" and 1.75" squares) board that I can easily stow in my backpack. While I like the idea of the JLP "stack" & Colorado Woodworker "tower" series, I felt that a board that folds in half would be more practical (taller and thinner, and therefore a better fit for my backpack or shoulder bag, vs. a thicker square shape). I also did _not_ want a board with 'storage' - both for structural integrity purposes as well as ease of use. Getting pieces out & putting them away into a storage board seems way fussier than just using a cloth bag.

With that in mind, I've been intrigued by the World Chess Studio set's folding board. Found one on eBay this weekend that was a tempting enough price to pull the trigger on. Will report here with some impressions once it arrives.

Now the question is... do I use it with my size 2 Chavets? Or splurge on a set of world chess studio pieces...

In a related note - anyone selling used world chess studio pieces at a discount? I've read so much about how terrible they are and how everyone hates them, they must be available somewhere!

Enjoy the board!

Regarding the pieces - I’ve flipped and flopped on these pieces and I currently think they are an excellent modern interpretation of a classic design - just too expensive for me.

I’m sure, views will continue to differ markedly on these pieces. They seem to divide on lines of a love of the pieces and respect of the design ideas, to a deep disdain and dislike.

In the end, our individual perspectives drive our individual purchase decisions and I hope that you’ll enjoy your set. I reckon the Chavets will look lovely in the board, as will the Weil’s if you find a set.

Congratulations. I'd love to see pictures. What did you pay for the board?

The board is made by Rechapados Ferrer in Spain. I have other boards from them. They are a well known and reputable maker.

I like the thin border around the World Chess folding board, the angled edge to make grabbing it easier and the fabric hinge. I would like to get this board too. Chavet 2 should be a good size.

Hi @natteh,

I hope you're enjoying your WCS folding board. I bought the complete set last year, and overall, I really enjoy the design, proportions, and weight of the pieces for casual play and analysis. The design of the board is quite nice too, and its slim proportions make it practical to store or carry around.

But, if you're considering buying the pieces, be aware that although the designs are nice, the execution is very, very poor (disappointingly poor). I had six pieces that needed replacement: four black pieces had the black stain peeling off, and the two white bishops had their 'mitres' carved poorly and chipped. Although the official FIDE store sent replacements and offered me a partial refund, the new pieces they sent were slightly different in design and proportions compared to the original set. I was curious about the design and wanted to own these pieces, but they are overpriced.

Recently, I bought a new set for analysis (with an 85mm King) that cost me around USD 60. They go really nicely with the Studio board and cost a fraction of the Studio pieces (USD 279). Unless you're very curious to own a modern set with historical significance, you should reconsider whether buying the Studio pieces is worth your money and the hassle of dealing with replacements and customer service. Otherwise, just grab a nice set of pieces with an 85mm King you like, and you're all set.

Good luck with your decision.

Cheers!
