Dvoretzky or Kasparov in Russian

Natalia, would it not be more impressive in Russia to see your neighbor reading Kasparov in English?  How many people in Russia take the trouble to learn a difficult language like English?

I suspect that in Russia they have Ukrainian books out to impress people, in Ukraine they have Armenian books, and in Armenia the books don't have words at all.

Oinquarki, perhaps if you travel with us to see the wizard he will give you a brain. Of course, if he doesn't, you wont be any worse off than you are right now. So join with us---altogether---We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of  Oz. Because, because, because, because---because of the wonderful things he does.....

Weirdly, unlike most people here, old books/magazines would be more likely to render me unimpressed. I get the feeling the type of people who read these rather than the newer and more accurate material are only doing so for pleasure, not as a serious attempt to be a better player.

Old material doesn't mean inferior material.

Is Botvinnik's 100 Selected Games less than fertile ground to work for an average player wanting to get better?

One can name a long series of 50+ year old works that are great to immerse oneself in.

I have already explained that in another post. I'm not knocking the books as such, just that newer material is probably more relevant if you want to make it near the top. OK, I'm sure you can start spouting about how x studied the games of y, but I bet those same people don't anymore. I strongly believe that while you can learn stuff from older books, there is a reason the top players don't base their study on it. Interesting the only titled player to post also thought of Dvoretsky though.

Imo there is too big a myth that older books means you are getting better material. It can attract the sort of people who deliberately leave their books for you to see, the posers of the chess world. Not everyone, but a lot of people buy them with the belief that it shows they have some sort of amazingly refined taste in books, and go on and on about it. Impress me? Not one bit.

ROFL!  Finally your post makes sense!  Only someone who still believes that the wizard of Oz is real will have a chess book on his coffee table to try and impress people.  Send my regards to the tooth fairy while you at it troll…

The titled player you referred to is very young and probably grew up on Dvoretsky ---no mystery there.

I think you need to see the wizard for some geography lessons.

Amigo's are from Mexico.

Wouldn't even have to be the whole book. Just one parchment leaf of Lucena's book would be nice.

Sorry, I wouldnt be impressed. I have 7 or 8 Dvoretsky books and if one shows up on my neighbors coffee table...

Bound Chess Review annuals ---that would impress me.

And this---

And this---

and this---

These are some of the books that would impress me if I saw them on someones coffee table.

I have that Capablanca book. It's more of a normal reading book than a chess book.

At least no one has yet made the mistake of referring to Scotland as being part of England! (Maybe that is just a matter of time...)

He is for real and also right. In what way is the UK coming apart at the seams? And what has that to do with anything?

*SIGH* these trolls, one always have to explain everything to them in “kinder garden-like detail”.

My post about Mexico was sarcasm.  Please do the following exercise.  Get a map of Africa.  Place your left index finger on South Africa (that is where I am) and then proceed to place your right index finger on any of the other countries you mentioned.  You will notice (it might be with a certain degree of difficulty) that there is a difference of several thousand miles between my location and that of the closest “Amigo”.

What I was trying to point out to you is that the chances of me encountering any “Amigo’s” in my country are as slim as that of a Japanese person meeting up with a “home boy” from Harlem in the heart of Tokyo.

Before I leave your post, allow me to make a few suggestions to save yourself from future embarrassment.

1)  Before you post some “googled” knowledge about a country you clearly know nothing about, make sure that nobody living in that country is included in your post.  They might point the obvious out to you.

2)  Before placing some grandmaster-level Russian chess book on your coffee table to try and impress people, check that none of your visitors are from Russia.  Otherwise you are going you embarrass yourself even more and your (already low) self-esteem will take another nose dive.

3)  If you do feel the need again to post about the “weaknesses” of WIM and WGM-level players, be sure to show us some of your victories over these “weak” woman players BEFORE you start paTROLLING.

And lastly, I have never encountered anyone who stutters when they type.  I quote: "Because, because, because, because---because of the wonderful things he does.....".  You must be a "special" breed of troll!  :-D

Hey amigo, you got a good shtick---keep it up!  Whenever you are caught in a mistake, just maintain you were being sarcastic.

Your second point is so idiotic I dont even know where to start---so I wont.

As to your 3rd point---I think you are in the wrong thread pal!

As to your last point---I was quoting a line from the song you idiot. The Wizard of Oz is the most watched film in the history of film and you havent seen it---which doesn't surprise me!  Get out of the house once in a while but be careful of those lions, tigers and bears----OH MY!

Yeah, I know kid---you really didn't mean I was stuttering---you were just being sarcastic.   Good Shtick!
