What Drueke Set is this?

Hi all -

Found this set on eBay Link. 3.75" King. Seller says it's from mid-1990's.

Curious if anyone knows about it. Pieces are definitely not players choice, but I like the look. Seller didn't know a model name or have much info.

Any thoughts?  What about the price?

Also... does a bishop like that with the angular style have a name for that design? I'm still learning my chessmen.

the above link has a youtube video. In the video they say that this set is Drueke’s 82040 in rosewood and boxwood.

hey thank you! googling that yields almost no results. this is an elusive set, eh?

I didn’t think so, but I’m far from an expert. A guy at our chess club brings this set in to play with all the time.

here is another link that has this set

Yep that was the only link i could find, too. but it looks like that website is from 2009. Either way... looks like the eBay guy has inflated the price due to the name Drueke.

Well, this is indeed a Drueke set.  I bought one in 1991 and gave it away as a gift to an IM.

Eyechess - love to hear your thoughts on it in more detail.

I may have found another one like it, thought the pieces seem to be ebonized boxwood not rosewood. Thinking of pulling the trigger (it's sub $100).

Flandang0, if you do pull the trigger, post some pictures. I’d love to see it.

My latest chess piece purchase, a Drueke Players Choice knock-off.null

Crappov

It is a Drueke set, I have one.  It doesn't have a name but but it was sold well into the 2000's (by Carrom).  I always thought it was underrated - a nice set that didn't cost a fortune.

Crappov - Do you know where it was made? Is yours with ebonized boxwood? I'd love to see a picture!

Eyechess

I agree with Crappov.  That set was quite inexpensive, well under $100.

I always like the bevel on the Bishop miters.  And the rest of the set is good as well.  The wood for my black pieces was Rosewood.

If you want the set for playing and you can get it for under $100, this would be a nice set to own and play with.

Crappov

I'm guessing, but I don't think it was made in the USA.   It was probably made in India and simply branded with the Drueke name.  I have a rosewood version and the wood is gorgeous.

He writes as an authority but every thing he writes is patently wrong.

House of Chess makes a similar copy of 82040 set. They call it the Broad base.

To start off, If the rook does not have the name "DRUEKE" engraved on top of it, it is most definitely not a Druke set. I know this because I have an official Druke set that I bought myself in 1995. Druke Staunton chess pieces are the best ever. The rook HAS to read Druke on top.

RussBell

It's spelled 'Drueke', not 'Druke".

The rook was stamped on the Player's Choice pieces, but not on their wooden sets.
