What is the best counter opening for scotch gambit

If you're white, you initiated the gambit. You can't really counter a gambit that you initiate. What happened?

I thought he was black...
OP--rule of thumb, when you're white, YOU control the tempo in the opening! It is your duty to put YOUR opponent in a position that he is not familiar with. Get what I'm saying? DON'T play an opening YOU are not familiar with! Translation: You're obviously not familiar with the Scotch gambit so DON'T play the Scotch gambit!

When i played a chess tournament the other day, I loss a chess game ( I was White) because of scotch gambit. Can anyone help
