I got Chess for Beginners, by I. A.  Horowitz for 49 cents. I go to the second hand store to look at the books once in a while, and got it there.

If its the 1957 edition it could be valuable. But , It cost 1 penny on amazon used, + shipping which is about $4.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chess-Beginners-I-A-Horowitz-book-HC-DJ-1950-old-/400202382180?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible   That's the very one I've got. 1950 edition. Alas, as you can see it's not.

...and who compiled The Golden Treasury of Chess (and who lost a match against Reshevsky 6 1/2 - 9 1/2 in 1941...not too shabby a result against a genius).
