Don't worry the chess pieces are waterproof . . .

The poor chess set is unloved.......

This is the type of set typically used by players in tournaments with a vinyl, roll-up board.

I am sorry if I am bringing a very old thread back to life but I wanted to comment that I actually own one just like this except with slightly beige white pieces which are referred to as “camel” probably implying it is the same color a camel bone pieces would look like.

I think nearly all , or at least 99% of chess pieces made of plastic are made cheaply in China. But I don’t think it means they are bad. The one on the picture is actually one of the more premium plastic sets. The most common more genetic looking set has slightly smaller proportions and is usually not weighted or just lightly weighted. That one I think is a pretty bad design especially because that common set has a very ugly derpy looking knight whose mouth appears to be in the wrong place, or just poorly sculpted.

from what I researched over the years, the design shown in the original post of this thread very accurately reproduces the form of the original editions of Staunton sets. Some people think it’s the one referred to as Cooke design. There is a lot of debate about who should be credited for what.

It is a set like many others, and the board and the set fit together. It is also improve that it has enough weight, so you can also play  blitz with it. I am a chess collector, but I often play with a simple set like this when I am at work (okay, I am allowed, as I give chess lessons for beginner in a rehab clinic).  Not a huge difference between an expensive and a cheap set if they have enough  weight.

My cat Boy is very selective concerning chess sets…

What's that thing above the radiator? Looks like a model of an airship?

It's a old zeppelin toy.  Well spotted!

Nice! When does it date from?

Around 1930, I guess.

Predates the Hindenburg disaster then. No surprise really.

What a cool object though.

I have some other items related to the zeppelin. I didn’t try to build up a collection, but the impact of this huge  airship had on the people in this time was amazing. This is why you still can find objects from this time in flea markets.
Imagine an object like this passing over your city. Like the ufo in Independence Day.

Hi

Hubby has just given me an early Valentine's present and to be honest I don't know what to make of it or even if I like it! Not telling him that of course 😄. Maybe it will grow on me!

I had this on my Wish List on Amazon until I read a really bad review and decided not to buy but I didnt delete it from my list hence hubby surprising me with it just now!

It appears to be quite heavily weighted and is quite large. King is 4 inches but because bases are quite wide it looks bigger.

One if the weights is rattling round in the Knight. It's supposed to be a triple weighted set and got a feeling it's probably made in China.

There's no indication on any of the pieces where it's from or what it is.

It looks like the typical handy-dandy Analysis Chess Set to study and learn on.

I'm not understanding what the problem could possibly be; unless, you were looking for a 'beautiful' chess set with which to enhance the decor of your home with.

Is your quandary based on Form vs. Function?

This is an old thread. I believe the OP prefers a set made from wood, perhaps ebony and boxwood. I doubt of the style was the issue, the plastic set she posted pictures of was in a basic standard Staunton pattern.
