Whats the CHEAPEST e-board to connect to chess.com?

Hi,
I am looking for the cheapest board to connect to chess.com
I do have the SquareOff Pro, that may have been the cheapest ive seen,... but im looking for even cheaper happy.png

Do note, size isnt an issue, if anything I actually want a small board, as right now my main eboard is the Chessnut Pro, and as glorious as it is, it takes up a lot of space, id rather something smaller that I can sit at my PC with. Or transport around.  I am thinking the Chessnut Air might be to one, however I wouldnt mind experimenting with another brand if there is something cheaper out there.

Probably the Millenium e-One @ 199 Euros, although I do not particularly like the pieces for that set.

I was going to suggest the Air but I did not realize it had gone up so much. But I guess that is the least expensive other than the e-One.

If you already have the Pro then the Air fits in nicely with your setup, same interface/app.

The creators of ChessUp have started a new Kickstarter project, ChessUp 2, which will be deeply integrated with Chess.com utilising a touchscreen on the board (maybe an answer to EVO 😉). Through April, it will cost $199. I think it’s a bit larger than Air, but not too big.

I have backed Chessup 2 (also have the Chessup 1) but that little touchscreen will in no way be an answer to the Evo. It is the size of a credit card, the tablet on the Evo is larger than an iPad Mini.

In addition, I do not see where we can buy extra sensors to make our own Chessup pieces because as far as I can tell Chessup does not do full piece recognition. It knows the starting "position" of the pieces and remembers where they move but you can start the game wrong, e.g. with the Rook and Knight transposed, and it thinks the board is setup correctly.

Hopefully the 2 will continue to be able to use third party apps and the chess[]com partnership does not ruin that.

I like the Chessup 1, I think the Chessup 2 will be a good addition to the field, but no way is it an answer to Evo.

I definitely didn’t mean that it was in any way similar to EVO, because EVO uses another technology and a larger screen, as you said. I was merely commenting on the inclusion of a screen. Maybe I should have said inspired by EVO😉

About piece recognition, then ChessUp 2 does indeed have that😊 I am not backing them, even though it’s tempting. I already have ChessUp 1, Chessnut Pro and Air and soon I’ll get iChessOne, which I’m super excited to receive😊

Will be interested in your thoughts on the iChess. I looked at getting one but am worried about the folding and the electronics.

Also, where did you see that the Chessup2 will have actual piece recognition and sensors you can buy. Could not find that listed and I did not see that in the Chessup Discord channel. You would think they would push that feature so people know they can make their own pieces

Chessup 2 is live now on Kickstarter, and you can see all the info there. They don’t have sensors to buy though.
What are you worried about with regards to the electronics and the folding of the iChessOne board? Do you think it could be easily damaged in the long run?

Yes, I knew about the Kickstarter, I pledged for the Chessup 2 last week. Asking on Discord about the full piece recognition and sensor, as well as being able to use the touchscreen with Lichess as well as chess[]com. If it is just chess[]com then it is quite useless.

As for the iChessOne, yes the longevity is a concern for me, the folding and unfolding of the board repeatedly breaking the thin wires that have to be being used. I am curious how well it might be made.

A folding e-board would be great but I was wary of it at the start and they seem to be falling quite far behind ... originally set to ship in Oct 2023 (according to the Kickstarter page), just updated to June of 2024. (not as far behind as some projects I have seen so hopefully they will be coming soon).

About ChessUp. The screen is currently only for Chess.com as they’re focusing on the collaboration with chess.com. The board will, however, still work with the iOS/Android app like it does for ChessUp 1. About the sensors, as their pieces has touch sense, I guess it’s impossible to get that feature inserting their sensors in custom pieces. If you want to know more about the full piece recognition, or other features, you should write a comment on the Kickstarter page, they seem to be answering all the questions quite quickly and thoroughly.
About iChessOne, there are no wires connecting the two halves of the board, so you wouldn’t have to worry about that. They have a lot of features in store and I definitely dont think they’re falling behind. They will also be supporting Chess960, Three Check, Antichess and it’s also possible to play Daily Chess. You will be able to customise the LED lights: choose colour for various functions, adjust light strength, make them blink, turn them off. The board will connect to all the same third party software that Chessnut does. They will implement an opening explorer. It will work with both Lichess and chess.com. I would recommend you to look at some of the videos where the board is being tested, like AI Su chess: iChessOne review

As I said, I am awaiting answers on the Chessup Discord channel and I have had several email conversations with them as well. I have worked with them in the past to iron out some small bugs so I am familiar with them.

As for this statement about iChessOne:

They have a lot of features in store and I definitely dont think they’re falling behind

They listed on their Kickstarter "Estimated Delivery Oct 2023"

But now they are listing June 2024 for "Manufacturing and Shipping" (and based on history, stands a good chance of being changed again).

That is called falling behind (8 months).

You state

If that was not part of the original plan, then that is called project creep and it kills projects. If it was part of the original plan, why were they so wrong about the original date? And a few of these "features" (if not most) could be added as a firmware update and/or app updates, so the board could have been shipped and updated OTA.

As I said, I hope this project is completed and works well. It would be a nice addition to the e-board field.

JBabkes

A lot of interesting options to consider before deciding which electronic board to buy.

Rsava

Most definitely, James. Most definitely.

Sure, I when referring to the delayed shipping then they’ve definitely fallen behind😊 I thought you meant feature-wise😉 I’m sure all these support for different chess variants and other platforms will indeed be in a future software and firmware update. Daily chess and the light functions are already up and running though. I really hope they won’t delay it further than June

Chessup answered on Discord, I asked 3 questions:

1) The Kickstarter page says "Full piece recognition", does this mean if I have the R and N transposed at the start of the game it knows those pieces are out of place? Currently Chessup 1 does not.; 2) Along those same lines, if it is true piece recognition, will we be able to buy extra sensors (like you can with Chessnut) to make our own pieces to use?; and 3) Will the touchscreen work with Lichess as well as Chess[]com?

They replied:

Yes, it would know that, but the main value of the piece recognition is to set up any position and play. The Piece ID is extremely helpful for users so they can setup a position directly on a board instead of loading a FEN String. Piece ID is also important for people who set up the board wrong or handle captures a bit sloppy.Regarding the extra sensors, I'm not authorized to answer that on Discord. The touchscreen will work with Lichess as well with chess.com

So, good news that it will be full piece recognition and that the small touchscreen will also work with Lichess. A bogus answer about purchasing the sensors. It is not some big secret, either yes they will be available or no they will not.

Rsava

I asked a follow up question on Discord requesting how I could get the info about purchasing sensors, letting them know it does not affect my decision to back the Chessup 2.

Apparently they do not want to talk about it because they removed my post. I guess the answer will be no and they are afraid that people will not back the board if they answer in that way.

Foolish of them.

DeDEtlev67

It would be great if chessup2 integrates with other chess platforms as well. I see it is backed by chess.com but maybe they open up for others as well

Rsava

@DeDEtlev67 - I asked on the Chessup Discord channel and BryghtLabsBae said that the touchscreen (as little as it is) will also work with Lichess. I did not ask about other platforms though.
