Where are all of the chess books?

In Thailand where I am Kinokuniya have some books in their physical store in Bangkok and more in their on line store. Prices are comparable to US/UK sites. Local delivery is free for orders over 1000 Thai baht (about 32USD).

Come to think of it, the last bookstore I remember having a decent collection of Chess books was in 2006...

Great thread w some good recommendations. For chess and other books.

Wherever you may find books online, please be sure they are legitimate and not pirated. There are many sites that advertise free books in pdf format but they have been stolen and offered for free without the author's or publisher's permission.

There is a bookstore in my town (Portland,Maine,USA) that has a limited but decent selection. I picked up Alexander Munninghoff's Euwe biography and The Russians Versus Fischer, which has every game Fischer played vs the USSR players there. Also got the first three My Great Predecessors by Kasparov there. The store is called yes books and the selection of non chess stuff, especially history, is unreal. Good place to visit for any bibliophile. I am not endorsing them through any conflict of interest or anything I just have pride in my local bookstore. It's just nice to see a shop that isn't owned by some massive corporate entity.

Just to know such a bookstore is out there offers hope. Nice purchases. Thank for sharing.

Agree with the caution about pirated books in pdf format... pdf out of copyright is a wonderful thing, but copyrighted stuff, not so much.

I find the used books listed on Amazon to be a good source, but then I'm not expecting collector editions nor perfect copies.  Cheap is good.  And many of them come from GoodWills around the country.  If I had to rely on the brick and mortar bookstores here in the desert it would be pretty sad.

I have bought a bunch of used books, especially Dover editions, on Amazon for really good prices and usually in pretty reasonable condition. Botvinnik's 100 games, Smyslov's best games, Rubinstein 100 masterpieces by Kmoch, usually for around 4 dollars.

Though I had stated my local library has over 60 really good chess books,I still like to own some......Chess books seem to be a bargain if one is careful and a good consumer. Many can be found for very low prices and are in good shape too.

If you are ever in Vegas, Amber Unicorn Books has 100 or so cheaply-priced chess books.  Great selection.

I’m in a pretty big metro area.  The library system is well funded.  Chess selection, both in print and digital lending is pathetically small.  Tiny.  The last refurb they did on the main library resulted in more open space, some fancy leather chairs, computers, and a reduction in books.

I'm also in a pretty big metro area, and both a rosbust library system, and the brick and mortar stores, are lacking. It's thriftbooks.com or e-books (paid for or free public domain) for me.

It's not just the books that are taking a beating. The picture below was taken in September, 2015; there were five mags available on a news stand. Now we're down to only two. Chess Life and Mat are gone...
