Where can I buy a chess set similar to the one used in Lyons 1990?

I am amazed at the number of chess sets, both style and quantity, currently (and historically) produced. Some people must have an awful lot of chess sets. I have 4 sets, only one Staunton style, two were are gifts - Lord of the Rings and a Mexican Aztec. I always considered paying more the $29.95 excessive, but some of them are so beautiful I may well lash out and buy a nice set like the one you are discussing.

Currently at US$ 2,631.40 w/ more than an hour to go in the auction... Auction prices for vintage No.6 Tetes Fines Chavet sets have become ridiculous. They should not be costing way more than a vintage Jaques...

Not me lofl. I paid what I thought was a ton for mine at $500. I have said it a million times if Chavet would bring this design back and market it as a WCC style set they would make BANK.

FrankHelwig

not me either. I got mine for approx. $200 which I thought was way overpriced at the time... happy.png

That is a #5 size set I believe due to the King's size. Also the cross on the this smaller king is fatter than the size #6 that went for $3k plus. Here's my #6 (ref. B-210) King. Note the slightly different cross shape.  null

One just sold on ebay for a little over 3000 dollars!

Different knight too, in fact the set looks a little odd to me.

So I was thinking of finding a second one because I have two sons and I wanted to leave one to each later on.

At this price they're going to have to play against each other for it when they're older :-)

Lol. I know what you mean.  I have a second #6 vintage Chavet but it is the Natural and Black stain. Same great carving and the black pieces really highlight it.  null

But here we are and you can't argue with Adam Smith and the basic laws of supply and demand.

Obviously many people love the Chavet design for it's simplicity and the artistic knights. The B210 fits perfectly on a 2.25" squares, regulation board and for me at least, most of the Jaques sets have ugly knights. What I don't understand is how anyone could like Lardy knights but the plastic reproduction is probably the most sold set in the world.  Art is very subjective. Do you like Realism? Impressionism? Modern? Cubism?  The Chavet B210 is beautiful, in my opinion, and obviously in very high demand.

PRICES MAY CONTINUE TO RISE!

Just received my Reproduction 90s French Chavet Championship Tournament Set in Sheesham/Boxwood from Chess Bazaar. The set fits perfectly on a 2.25" square board.

Overall, happy with my purchase. If I had to do it over, I would opt for either the Ebonized Boxwood version for the same price or the more expensive Bud Rosewood version.

As my taste in chess sets have become more discriminating, my preference has shifted away from Sheesham towards Ebony/Ebonized and the darker Rosewood.

It is ridiculous chavet 6, have higher price than other with more than 100 years. Also although nice for playing, the carving complexity is low, and the number of them available in France should be high. that's crazy, but at the moment, it is the law of supply and demand!

There are three judgments on value in your post:

-What is harder to make (carving complexity) should be more expensive.
-What is older should be more expensive.
-What is rarer should be more expensive.

I find I can barely agree with one: that something that is harder to make should be more valuable, maybe I can agree with that, It's not always true, but maybe it should.

That something that is older should be more expensive I definitely disagree. It depends what the object is attached to not its age. In this case it is a set that is identical to a no longer made set that was used for both tournaments that had the best players of their age (Linares look at the pics in this thread it is amazing) and some great championships (Lyon).  The set is attached to the era. It will mean more to some people than a collectible from another era. Who says a set that Fisher played with in championship should be more expensive than one played by Kasparov, Karpov, Anand, etc.? It's not because it happened further in the past that it is somehow better or more interesting in itself.

Now that something that is rare is more expensive. Well it depends where. Take Gold. You can probably mine it from asteroids or in the long run other planets. It is rare but not THAT rare in the universe. Now take human excrement. Yes that. It is probably much rarer in the universe than gold. Probably if you needed to make food somewhere on another planet you'd give all you have to buy human excrement to be able to raise some crops (provided you had an atmosphere of course). So I know which one is actually rarer. But for some reason the other one has the most value ;-)

You will say yes but there is lots of human excrement on earth but very little gold who cares about the universe? I will say yes and there are lots of chavet sets owned by people in France who couldn't care less about selling them, but the chavet sets are rare where the buyers are: in the US and the UK....

This is not to say I personally think these sets are worth USD 3,000. I don't. I was willing to pay 500-600 USD for them when I was looking for one. And that was because I wanted it one in the next few months I was not patient.  I think the real value should be 300-600 USD. To some extent if they are too expensive one day I'll be tempted to sell mine and I like it I don't want to be tempted.

The carving complexity may be low but their vintage Queen design was the most beautiful I have seen. Compared here to the modern one (on the left). To me the new one looks like a factory reject. Ugh ... null
