Im not talking the hollow stauton plastic pices where they ususally break for no reason.. I have seen some set where its made compelyely of plastic and the pieces would get chipped but not completely break..

The only one I know of is the Basic USA Tournament set used quite a lot in USCF Tournaments. There might be others out there as well.

I recently bought a plastic set that isn't solid but has much thicker plastic than most sets. They feel really durable for a plastic set. It's called Master Chess from Cardinal Industries. I don't think they make it anymore but a quick search found some on eBay and Amazon. They also made one called Grandmaster Chess that looks the same. I got mine at a yard sale so I couldn't give you a good guess what it's really worth.

Here's a few links:

[edit: I noticed my second link said "solid" so I checked the page. They do advertise that set as being solid plastic. They could be. I haven't handled any unweighted plastic sets in a long time so I may not be a good judge of weights.]

The stauton chess pieces feels good but they are hollow and break easily especially the black pawn .

What kenardi said. You can buy a basic set of solid plastic pieces all over the place.  They usually have paper felt bottoms but if you want you can replace them.

If I had to do it all over again, I would go with HOS as they use real billiard cloth which is way better than the paper crud..!!

i agree... i think USCFsales (HOS) is the only place that still has REAL felt on the plastic tournament chessmen.  i do like that... i do not like that cheap paper felt at all.... but the pieces are not solid.

Oh shoot.. the pieces are not solid.? At least the German club set is & with real felt. Shipping from Germany might be expensive though.

im pretty sure they aren't... i could be wrong.  i have one old set that is solid plastic, no felt or paper on the bottom, just solid plastic.

wood is solid Laughing... still, it can break.

Yep Ken, nothing is 100% BULLET PROOF..!!!

Do not get trapped if it says felt it could be the paper felt.  Anytime I got billard cloth or baize it stated that. Anytime I bought plastic and it said felt it was the elcheapo felt or paper felt both of which suck.  Buy some off of Alan if he still has it for $5 .
