don't know much about the tasmanian wood but it looks nice. ebony tends to crack, too, so I'd probably take a chance on the blackwood (though it looks like the grain may have an impact on the smoothness of the piece, whereas ebony is smooth... just something else to consider)

I know this thread is from a year ago, but I’ve only recently joined Chess.com.

I love the HoS Margate Series. That would be my favorite. Next would be the Kiev Series. I have them both in boxwood and golden rosewood.

Even though they are out of stock. Their Modern Series Chess set is a nice economical set. It's like a Modern Day Bohemia set with German style Knights.

The Modern is a good looking set. I wanted to buy it a year ago but I hesitated. Now it’s out of stock!

I like the two sets I mentioned in #3 because I favor English and Soviet-style sets. I also like the Margate because you get two different styles of Knight. That and the extra queens mean the set has 38 pieces!

Yeah I saw the Margate set in person at a tournament. It is a lovely set. My opinion about sets with different pairs of Knights. Is one pair is lovely while the other pair is the ugly red headed step children. Me personally I prefer the smooth simple Knights in the Margate set over the more detailed Knights. So I would have 4 Knights doing nothing but collect dust. I get the idea of having 2 different pairs of Knights. Just not the reason. However my taste might not be your taste when it comes to Knight design.

If I have to choose HOS then my choice would be The Steiner:

It is the closest reproduction to the classic Piatigorsky sets. However their price is outrageous. Beautiful and graceful.

I love many sets from HoS including Collectors 3.75 and 4.0 both in wood, Fischer Spassky Commemorative, Leeds, Zagreb 3.875 and probably a few others. The one I really like now is the Cooke Luxury in mopane because it is a Cooke set where the stems of the pieces are thin and the bases are flattened. It also comes with the knight designed by Frank C. https://www.houseofstaunton.com/camaratta-signature-series-cooke-luxury-chess-pieces-with-boxwood.html
