Hello all. I have recently joined and have purchased an Anjan and Boxwood chess set from New Zealand Chess Supplies https://www.chess.co.nz/online-shop/chess/chessmen-wood/86-98mm-king/anjan-and-boxwood-jaques-staunton-chessmen-95mm-king and would like to know which woods would best compliment this set. whilst the website has provided some recommendations I would love to hear from the experience of others who know these woods

Thank you

I have a set of the same wood with a walnut and maple board, which looks fine. Personally I prefer less contrast on the board than the website suggestions, and for the pieces to be a bit darker than the squares, but its just a matter of taste and I haven't tried it with a different board. If you ask him, Vinko should give you the base diameter for the king. I'd go for about 75% king base to square size.

Thank you. I am very pleased that you suggested the walnut and maple board as it confirms my thoughts. The kings base diameter is 41mm, therefore the 55mm square size seems the most appropriate option.

I am not sure if this will help but here’s a thread with a set of Anjan wood pieces on various boards. Unfortunately, I don’t know the woods on the boards but at least you get a sense of different woods with anjan pieces. Oddly, I don’t seem to have paired these pieces with a board of ebony and maple and my sense is that will be best due to the contrast with the anjan and ebony wood. St Petersburg in Anjan

Thank you both for your thoughts and suggestions. They are most appreciated.
