As long as it looks ok...... I would use it.
Why not use fleece instead of felt?

I think felt is more durable.
But try fleece, wouldn't hurt.
Pics?
One day, my friend. One day.

ultrasuede? or whatever that synthetic suede is called? There are all kinds of new materials that may supercede traditional ones, though wood will always be wood.

How about leather? I bought one set that has leather bases and really like it -- it has a more luxurious feel and sound than my others, which all are felted.

For those of you fans who like building sets, I prototyped a fleece set. The fleece tears up when you cut it and kind of gets messy. Little strings start falling everywhere. Also, I'm using fleece as padding on the board to dampen the sound. I feel felt might be thicker, albeit less soft, which would result in better sound dampening. The only way to test this out is make another prototype using felt... which I'm doing... now.

I just made a thread on this here: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/lets-talk-about-plastic
If I'm making these sets and donating them to my local chess club... I'm thinking they might not want to use heavy wood.
Hey guys, I'm trying to make the ultimate chess players' chess set. I've spent years designing this thing and now I'm choosing felt. Why not use fleece instead of felt? I'm talking about the material on the bottom of the pieces. Fleece is softer and more resistant to abrasion.
