Yet Another Soviet Russian Chess Set circa 1960s

Sort:

A very popular Soviet set and reportedly favored by Mikhail Tal. This style set originated in the early 1950s and can be seen in sets through  1980s. The early sets had more detailed knights and the pieces were somewhat nicer. This set is circa 1960s. Kings measure 3.75" in height and Pawns at 1.75". Set shown on a vintage Drueke Board with 2" squares.

That's a beauty, Mike. I love how all four knights are different, yet undoubtedly original. My set like this is my favorite of all of the ones I've acquired.

Thanks Robert, yes there is something  about the diffrent Knight carvings that makes this set special.

Very nice set, goodknightmike. I have one from around 1990. It lacks all the details that your set has but is still very nice and I like it a lot. I recently saw one on Etsy (is this it?) but wouldn't be able to justify to my wife why I'd need it. Finer details or not, she'd still see the very same set. Tongue Out

Thanks UpcountryRain, Yes, got it on Etsy. Trying to rationalize with your wife why you need another Soviet set sounds like  "Mission Impossible"

I know. Makes me want to conduct covert operations. But congratulations on the latest set. You have been building quite a collection of vintage sets.

Thanks Upcountry Rain, I've enjoyed collecting sets for many years and it has brought me much pleasure

Beautiful set up, those pieces look great on that Drueke.

thanks for sharing your pictures with us!

Your welcome informaticacobach29, I enjoyed sharing them

I especially like the knights. So distinctively carved, each one! Do I detect some red tinge in the finish on the white pieces? A couple of my Latvian sets have that. And a couple of my complete and partial Latvian sets have red pieces for the whites.

cgrau

Another thing I like about the earlier Latvian sets is that the turrets have four cuts. The later versions dispensed with those.

cgrau

Knights from my 1955 Latvian set. The white pieces are red.

cgrau

Rooks with the turret cuts.

cgrau

A rook from my sixties Latvian set. Note the red tinge and detail. Like it might have been refinished at one point.

cgrau

A third thing I love about your set is the detail and sharp cuts in the queen's crown. These got sloppier later. The queens from my sixties set. Note the red tinge on the queen, bishop, and pawn.

Namelecc

Ummmm. That is a lot of pictures. I lost count.

UpcountryRain

My later Latvian set has neither cuts in the rook or in the queen's crown. The knight is also very simple. cgrau, I especially like the knights from your 55 set. Look at the simple cuts for the eyes. Very simple but very effective.

No red tinge in the finish Chuck. Your red pieces are very nice indeed!

Really nice!!!

Latvian set from the seventies. Simple knights, rooks and queens without cuts.

Chuck, can you give us the King and Pawn heights of your nice Latvian set?
