I took a piece - so I'm a full piece up.
The tactic is - yes, it's his turn, but no matter how he takes a rook of mine - I just take back a rook, unharmed.
(and after I capture, then it's his turn again, but he's just a piece down - he has nothing powerful to do with this turn).
The thing is, if you do this...
...then you do give him options, but all of his them aren't dangerous; not even if there's a king nearby.
