How much do chess coaches charge per hour? A few references

One of the questions that is often asked about coaching is what it costs. So here are a few references.

Chess Coach Rates: How Much Should You Pay for Chess Coaching? (CircleChess, November 2024) Discusses rates for online coaching versus in-person coaching. The coach’s qualifications also play a role. According to this article, an untitled coach may charge $20–$50 per hour, whereas a GM may charge $100–$150 per hour or more.

How Much Do Chess Lessons Cost In 2024? (MyChessTutor, October 2023). (Below $40 per chess lesson, it’s bit of a mixed bag; $70 to $100 or higher is for “the competitive or advanced player”.)

Reasonable coaching hourly rates on the Lichess forums, December 2019, so likely outdated.


Update: this post does not argue that you should take a chess coach. It’s just to give people an idea of what the cost could be.
