I am serious about learning chess. Where should I start?

Hi I started playing chess for fun with my friends some time ago and I think I like it quite a lot. I want to learn how to play for real. Where should I start? Do you have any books/tutorials recommendations? I would like to learn from the ground up to become a good player (good enough to be competitive in tournaments).

The first book I ever read on chess starting out at a rating of about 500 - 600 on chess.com was Elements of Chess by Matthew Lowes. It’s not exactly a mainstream chess book but in my opinion it is one of the better ones out there for novice players & the chapters on clocks, etc may even prove helpful for intermediate players & beyond. Lowes is not a master or chess expert by any means but his annotations & way of breaking things down in the book proved useful for me as I’m sure it has/will for others.

As far online chess content creators John Bartholomew & Daniel Naroditsky are excellent.

I can teach you EXACTLY how to think during the game (opening, middlegame and endgame). Your chess understanding will never be the same and you will improve a lot. I charge €35/h (if you can't afford it, we can negotiate the price). If you can’t afford too many lessons, don’t worry. I can teach you a lot in an hour. Here to help if you are interested.

If you want to study by yourself, read ‘Logical Chess’. It is really instructive book. You have it on youtube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eTB7oHeRgM&list=PLUrgfsyInqNa1S4i8DsGJwzx1Uhn2AqlT

Reading books definitely help, "How to reassess your chess" is a good one to understand the concepts. I read "My system' by Aron Nimzowitsch, found it insightful as a beginner. happy

I can attest to 'My System'. Also 'Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess' is pretty good for beginners. These iconic chess publications are also available for free on the net. Just google "title+filetype: pdf"

Start by reading books and learning basic visualization skills, after this start playing games on chess.com (this website) or lichess (a different website)

Learning how to learn yourself becomes more and more important. Back in the days only books existed. Now there are free engines, free youtube videos and both are far more important than just books, because they are up to date - but tons of them are just clickbait and wasting your time. As a beginner you have no chance of finding out, what is important and what isn't. I can show you what to focus on to become a strong player. However this takes a while, at least an hour just to tell you what I know concerning youtube. If you want you can pay me just one lesson and instead of me teaching you chess, I will explain to you in detail what content to learn and what not to learn. I have seen content for 7 years and I know exactly what is necessary and what isn't. My youtube channel is for free, so if you don't want to spend money, you can watch a lot of videos I do there happy.png I am not like other youtubers at all. I don't focus on thumbnails, marketing, clicks, openings and screaming entertainment to get famous, but solely on educational content.

Hi! If you plan to study by your own, I would recommend you to start with Capablanca's "Chess Fundamentals". Or if you would like to have some customized lessons, just let me know, I'm a Chess.com coach.

Regards!
