Silman Teaches Tactics (1)
Author(s): IM Jeremy Silman

It is incorrectly stated that
" 1.Qh5 looks very threatening since 2.Qh7 mate looms. However, Black can hold on with 1...Rxf7 2.gxf7+ Qxf7."

Wrong!!

1. Qh5 Rxf7 2. gxf7 Qxf7 3. Rd8+ !! is a faster win than the given solution since

3.. Bxd8 4. Qh8#
3.. Qf8  4. Qh7#
3.. Qe8 4. Rxe8+ Kf7 5. Qh7#

In your last line, 5. Qh7 isn't mate since black has Kxe8, or am I missing something?

I think you're missing something, but the last line is flawed anyway... 4. Rxe8+ Kf7, should be 4.Rxe8 Kg7 (the king doesn't have f7 because of the white Queen on h5) 5.Qh7# ... I didn't refer to a board, but I think that's right.

Either way, the OP is IMO correct. Rd8 refutes Silman's defense. *gasp* Silman overlooked a move! Well, that's it, I'm throwing out all the things I've learned from the guy that have helped me steadily improve my chess game for the past two years... he's obviously a fraud!Wink

Yes, you are correct. I have now modified the response for this move and made it an alternate correct move.
