Hello everyone,

I am very very amateur chess player(28). I've learned chess in primary school but just basics. This summer, I really wanted to be a good chess player. Everyday I am trying to play at least 10 games. For example, with this account I played 570 games (280W / 12 D / 278L) I have more than one account on chess.com also I am playing on other chess sites. My current rating is around 800. I am solving puzzles everyday but I think it doesn't help me anymore. I've completed chess.com courses but still I cant improve myself. Am I dummy? No I don't think so. I am software engineer and writing complex algorithms is kinda mind exercise for me. Also I am watching a lot of chess streams and I think it is a good because I understand see how GM is thinking. Anyway, maybe it is a common problem you've faced before, so I think you can help me and give some suggestions. Thanks in advance.
BTW, sorry for my bad english if I made mistakes. It is not my native.

You really haven't done very many tactics (27 total) or lesson segments (90).  I would recommend 20 tactics exercises per day and at least a few interactive lessons where you spend minutes, not seconds, figuring out the right moves.

Looking at two of your recent 3 2 blitz games it is evident you are still playing the Bc4 Ng5 attacks that work only against brand new players. When you play at such a speed, it's little wonder you completely overlook things like mate in 1.

If nothing else take a course in how to refute such openings.

Thanks for your answer @notmtwain You might be right, practicing and puzzle solving never ends. But most of puzzles just about pins, forks, skewers.. But I am very weak on developing pieces (inc. pawn structure). I don't know many types of openings but after move 10, I don't know what should I do. I've studied some middlegame courses when I was 600, they helped me to reach 800. But what is next?

If you start solving the easy tactics problems, they get harder- much harder.

It's been my experience that it is very hard to improve unless you either often play against, or at least get feedback from players much better than you.

Looking at the example game above, I see two main issues.  First, lack of development.  You use your pawns to chase around the opponent's pieces, which is a valid tactic, but none of your queenside pieces are developed until move 25, and by then you're already lost (your opponent missed 24. ..Qf2#, btw).  The other issue, which comes from playing blitz, is that you look like you make the first promising move you see.  An Expert I once knew told me "when you see a good move, look for a better one".  You gained a good material advantage in the game above, but there were much more decisive moves you could have made to close of your opponent's counterplay.

I strongly recommend finding a club, and playing over the board without a time limit.  Be prepared to lose a lot of games, and to play out losing positions.  Everyone can be reasonably good a chess, but it's immensely harder if all you do is play folks at your own level.

Do not feel bad. If you are 800 in blitz some of us look at you as a chess deity.

If you want to improve stop playing only blitz games, you want to improve then you need to think more than usual, on blitz games you are not going to do this, I am 1830 on blitz and I can say that in blitz the real thinking doesnt exist, start playing slower games and do tactics

If you are rated about 800, then the problem is probably just dropping pieces. Sometimes this is directly, but sometimes by obvious tactics from the opponent. If you take just a minute, or second or two in blitz, look out for these hanging pieces/threats your opponent may be planing. This method should probably carry you to about 1200 rating, at least. Of course, continue to play games as well as tactics, or studies etc.

It may be better for improvement if you have a lot of time to think during the games (longer time controls, even if this means playing less games), but "how long" is "long" is a preference. For most people they mean, games at least an hour. Personally, I feel that I have plenty of time to think and I play 10 minute blitz. Although I do not like the "no-thinking" fast chess, like 1 minute. Once you improve, pattern recognition will come faster, so you will require less time. But do not be fooled, players who play 10, or 5 minute blitz, or even faster - have many lines memorized, and theory studied to eliminate "thinking" over the board.

Good luck improving, hope this helps happy.png

Of course people do think at 1 min. People save time by experience, similar to experienced rubik tube solver solving in 1 min. To save time, we only think only in critical moves which are about 10% of the games.(we use about 50% of time in those few critical moves. Others 90% are ply 1-3 , low depth moves or natural strategical push  moves, that can be moved by instant premoves or pushed within seconds( of course, move pointers are already on our planned moves to save time for those push moves)

Get into a club and otb-matches does help a lot., And you learn more from one long game than from 10 short ones.  On this site we also have daily chess/correspondence. In daily you can use openingbook where you can see how good players usually opens the games. This helps you gewtting familiar with openings, and you have time to spend days on every move in middlegame and endgame, time to really figure out much.

Guys, many many thanks for your comments. Thanks for reading my topic, for your tips and analysing my games.

It is good to see everybody noticed I am always playing 5 or 3 min games. From now on, I won't play chess under 15 min.

@notmtwain you are absolutely right man, you caught me! I will try different game openings and try to develop pieces instead of fried liver attack. And of course I am never gonna stop playing tactics/puzzles.

@DjonniDerevnja I've made some research and finally I found a local chess club. This weekend I am gonna go there!

@FishEyedFools chill dude, I never played against me. I am trying to learn something here.

Anyway, thank you all for taking time!

Developing pieces is the fundament for tactics. If you are the faster developer, you will outnumber your opponent on critical squares, and this outnumbering gives chances for smashing tactics.  To be fast, avoid moving to many pawns early, and avoid moving a piece twice early. Also win open lines and diagonal . Win the center. Put a knight centralized, supported by a pawn. From there he controls 8 important squares. When you have developed everything into good places, tactical changes might be close. Find them. To find them and check everything  you need time.

@DjonniDerevnja This is exactly what I need to do work on. I will keep in mind all these tips. Now I see, how my playing style was wrong. But from now on, It is time to play correctly!

I'm late to this but just want to underline and reiterate what some others have said.

To the OP: Yeah, man - You don't want to keep playing blitz at this point. It's just going to reinforce what you already do wrong and be incredibly frustrating at the same time. You have all the time in the world to play blitz later on. Right now, you want to play with at least 30+ min on the clock (at least) for both players and really work on making sure all of your pieces are protected, you're not going to hang anything after an exchange, etc. Development, castling early, pushing center pawns when it's time to create space and open lines/diagonals, etc. If you start really working on things like that, with slower time controls, you'll gain 200-300 points in a flash.

Dude you are absolutely right. I will be more careful. It was a huge mistake to play 3 or 5 minutes games. There was no time to analyze or paying attention to correctly develop pieces while playing.
