Yep, and right now he has the tripple crown... world champion in classical, rapid, and blitz.

History won't remember you. Probably good for you that it doesn't.

what happened to the world chess championship (classical) I thought we were going to have Ding vs Nepo in about November or December, but I heard something about lack of sponsors. So no tournament, so Magnus is still champion?

I haven't heard anything about that, but Carlsen is still champion until Nepo and Ding play, yeah. If Carlsen had retired from chess then we'd have no WC right now, but he only said he wouldn't defend the title.

DreamscapeHorizons

There was a time a few years back (maybe 5 or 6 years ago) when Magnus was #1 in classical,  rapid,  blitz,  bullet,  AND 960  all at the same time.

WCPetrosian

Carlsen is the best player to ever play chess. But he grew up in a modern info age.

Relatively speaking Capa, Lasker, and Fischer all stood out above the crowd just as much if not more, even though Carlsen is stronger than they were.

Fischer was an info maniac, one can only imagine just how strong he could have become in this day and time. Stronger than Carlsen? We will never know for sure.

About the Nepo & Ding match. I seem to remember commentators during or right after the candidates saying something about their match being sometime in early 2023.

I think that is correct.

I don't think it'll get much sponsorship money because the demand won't be there simply because everyone knows these are #2 & 3 in the world.  The top player ain't even in it.  There's no way to gloss over that.

Just like all his peers... so it's not an advantage.

In fact with the democratization of information it would be easy to make the argument that being world champion today is more impressive than 70 years ago because today basically all talented kids have access to all the information they need to be a strong GM, so there's a lot more competition.

Chess2700 is quick site to see upcomming tournaments and matches (just scroll to bottom of their main page). https://2700chess.com/

No, it won't. He has had other surprise losses and has behaved just fine. Magnus is not a crybaby; he just has a problem with Hans.

Hans' lawsuit's allegation that Magnus is  'Notorious for his inability to cope with defeat...' is perhaps a little bit of an exaggeration, but it has some basis in fact.

For example in the 2016 world championship against Sergey Karjakin, Magnus arrived first and stormed out after a couple of minutes.

It must be very difficult to do these press conferences but they do agree to it when signing up for the tournament.

You could argue that Sergey was late, but that would make Magnus' behaviour rather ironic given his chronic frequent lateness to games. Imagine if all Magnus' opponents did this when HE was late!

Magnus had a couple of loses earlier this year to younger players (including Praggnanandhaa) and he didn't act up. I think he has decided that Neimann is a cheater and wants no part of him.

Hans acts like a jerk, which speaks for itself, but doesn't help.

I think Hans has a lot of potential. He should focus on that instead of snarky sound bites.

Magnus did not lose gracefully to Dommaraju Gukesh

Yeah I'm not convinced Hans actually played astoundingly that day during the Sinquefield cup: I think maybe Hans played well and Magnus played badly?

And this is hypothetical speculation on my part: I do wonder if Magnus played badly because he had already heard about Hans' past of online cheating?

I've wondered the same thing.

This isn't the first time he's been world champion in all 3 categories... so even this is not a big achievement for him.

Lol this is true. Hans is a bit of an enigma to me. I'd like to meet him one day and see what he is like in person without a camera crew. I do seriously wonder if there might be an explination for his behavior and way but speculating about that might be improper.

grin I find this sentence hilarious. Go and make some babies Magnus.

So this actually worries me.

I've heard people whisper over the years about Bobby Fischer, wondering if it was chess that drove him mad.

The theory of neuroplasticity kind of suggests that you change your brain by using your brain. If you do something a lot your brain will rewire itself a little to do that thing easier.

Every game we play we practice thinking many moves ahead.

In chess trying to work out what your opponent is going to do is a skill.
What is that kind of thinking called in everyday life?....... Paranoia!
