I'm sick and tired of Vyomo's constant trashing of 1.a4! No less an authority than Gordon Brown has dubbed it "the best move, ever!". His own analysis that supposedly shows the drawbacks of 1.a4 is chock full of flaws. He even fails to find the best lines for black! Observe this glaring blunder from his post #260. Here he has Qg5 as good for black, missing Bxc2+!

face it, a4 is the worst move anyone can make on their first move, and e4 e5 Ke2 is the worst stuff I've ever heard
And Qg5 leads to mate on the next move
"Without 1. a4!! controlling the vital b5 square, this win would not have been possible." Then why didn't black play 1...a6 contesting the "vital" b5 square?

1. e4 is not the only move that is susceptible to this variation of 'Fool's mate' after highly innacurate play. After black plays Bb5 and Qf6, white can respond with a variety of moves (ex. Nf3) and have a significant advantgeous. Fischer used to play 1. e4 until the latter stages of his career when he adopted1. Nf3.

Guys, I know that the topic started as a joke but actually 1.a4 is a nice move and perfectly playable in blitz games. The idea is to sacrifice the Rooks on a3 and h3 to obtain an advantage in development and create enough complications before the opponent can in fact use his material advantage.
Here is an example in which the victim was me in a 5min game!
