Why do people play this it gives white obvious compensation for the pawn

Would help if you give examples of possible lines.
After 4 f3 exf3 5 Nxf3 (Qf3? Qc8!) you are back in the standard gunderam defense.

What obvious compensation does white have after:
1 E3 e5
2 e4

Or 1 d3 e5
2 d4

Pfren,

I have seen other threads where you make clear that BDG is bad. And in theory you are right. I have played many BDG games against 2000-2150 level with a very good score. Ok that was 20 years ago, internet made things easier for black but my point is that a good opening which doesnt fit your style is often a bad opening for you.

And this is exactly what BDG often does for me, giving me a game I like, a game my opponents often don't like.

And in this situation theoretical rightness or not means nothing anymore unless the opponent also likes very tactical games and/or is just som much better (I mean, i dont doubt a second that any 2500+ player will punish my BDG).

Chess remains a matter of skills, I am sure you have lost lots of games you theoretically should have won :-)
