Thanks, Tigergut. Rudel does suggest h3. There's a further discussion of it in the zukertort forum on Rudel's site under the Conundrums topic. Jlueke is also right on, and I don't like delaying Nf3 nor do I like Bxf3 and doubling pawns on the f file after he takes. Such is chess... one can't prevent everything.

If you chase immediately with 4...h3 then if Bxf3 you have Qxf3 so no doubling and in theory a better game.  Of course most of the time black will play Bh5 so if you do play h3 you have to be comfortable playing g4 and dealing with the white king's weakness.

The only way to avoid all that is to play 1.d4 2c4 Tongue out although the QGA can be played much the same way

Definitely Qb3 tends to screw up things for black when that bishop is away from home

Play c4 for the Chigorin invitation. It seems other options to defend c4 are bleak.

waller 1.a3 is an irregular opening looserrrrrr

I don't think Bg4 should be very good for Black. 3. c4 and 3. Ne5 are both very good responses for White, and you can feel free to take with the g-pawn if they trade the pieces in 3. c4. I guess if you are unfamiliar with the position, I don't know. Otherwise I don't think 3. h3 is too good here.

the faster you stop being afraid of doubled pawns in tromposwky esque variations, the better your chess will be. Learn how to use the bishop pair and doubled pawn to your advantage.
but if you are adamant on a solution that wont double your pawns try

1.1.d4 d5 2.nf3 bg4, 3.ne5 bf5 (or bh5) 4.c4! with nasty qb3 ideas to target the weakened queenside.

2. if that is too high blood pressure for you, go 3.nbd2. Its the most solid response vs the Veserov attack and that is this position a tempi up wit nc3 (or rather nc6) thrown in, so with the extra tempi, nbd2 cant be bad. Although line 1 is a much better try for advantage.

Back when I was young and sharp (30+ years ago), I played the Albin Counter Gambit and Tchigorin Defence against 1. d4, d5; 2. c4. I hated 2. Nf3 like poison because it took me out of my mad hackery comfort zone. Against people of my erstwhile kidney 2..., Bg4, 3. e3 would do nicely for I would Die Of Stodge more often than not. However, having said that, once again @darkunorthodox88 has nailed it for a proper solution imho. Not that he needs my approbation what with being a far better player than I am.

On an intermediate level, against this 3.Ne5 line, black can try h5. Most players with the white pieces are expecting Bf5 or Bh5, so this can take them out of their prep, if they have any.wink White shouldn't take the bishop, simply 4.c4 is better. But some players can't resist getting the two Bs early on.
