I shot out of the beginner-intermediate range by working on tactics and playing exclusively hypermodern. Perhaps experimenting is a better way to grow as a player.

once you hit a certain level black will be able to refute the alapin and equalize quickly. Heres a sample line of what im saying
whites grand center he was hoping for will vanish and black has reached equality. Both sides have their own plans but this typically favors black in the endgame
I also like this line against the Alapin:
Black does very well in this line. White can get into trouble if they don't know what they're doing. From this position there are 2 common mistakes for white. Even if they know the 1 good move, black still gets a good game.
Play e4 or d4 but maybe just stay away from the symmetrical four pawn centres which I guess would be giuoco pianissimo with e4/d3 vs e5/d6 and d4 equivalent probably would be the London or colle with d4/e3 Vs d5/e6 or something like that.
many people play for the strategy of playing passively and waiting for their opponent to make a mistake. Likely some of you do this as well, and these people play d4 into the london against anything and just sit there getting easy development and hope black does something weakening to take advantage of it; If not? then you will sit there in a dead drawn rook-pawn endgame
would you rather play this?

Evans Gambit please! And Ruy Lopez!
D4 and E4 are equally strong if you are not giving your initiative with a system opening....
Open Sicillian is THE Sicillian. Alapin is definitely okay but something is just different that I can't put my words on. Closed Sicillian is just watching old people make out.
Yes. You are correct but many beginners respond to e4 with e5 allowing for powerful setups like the ponziani opening. I would as a result suggest e4 as a good beggining to a game.
I would also recommend e4 but I wouldn't recommend Ponziani. It has some tricks but I wouldn't describe it as a powerful setup. It's ultimately inferior to the big 3, Ruy Lopez, Italian and Scotch.
The Ruy Lopez is the best as it's the strongest and most ambitious at all levels. It's also good at lower levels as it has a lot of tricks. A lot of beginners play the Steinitz Defence (3. d6) which white does very well against.
White can also do very well against the Sicilian if they learn a proper setup against it like Yugoslav Attack, Richter-Rauzer, Fischer-Sozin Attack, etc. In this sense, it's good to play the Sicilian from both sides as it's a fun game for both players.
You could argue that but I like the ponziani because many begginners dont know a lot of theory for ways to deal with it. It is also highly agrresive pushing peices back and creates a strong center. I am not saying you are wrong, I am just saying that ponziani is fine for any begginner above 500 or so.

That’s literally how I play otb. I’m 2118. There’s this amazing thing called “strategy” and “positional play” when applied properly creates weaknesses in your opponents position, and the best thing about it is that you don’t have to spend as much time on the position. I have had many opponents in 90min and longer time controls be pushed to <10min while I have at least 4x as much time as them.
And, well, I’m lazy! So being boring is perfectly fine.

d4 can be great if you dont use a system opening like the colle or london. The stonewall is acceptable but many people below 1700 just play the london and colle only. instead they should try to be challenging and play the catalan against the QGD or east indian and play maybe 4 pawns agianst KID and pawn storm agianst benoni

thats why you cant get past 2100, yall are too passive but instead of being stupid like lesser levels, you just hang in for a draw
Well,he will probably have to play more ambitiously if he wants to get his NM title.London is great upto a certain level.... it's very hard to generate play in those positions.... Develop, trade, get to a endgame and boom, outplay opponents in the endgame. But still it's a viable weapon ....but honestly i hate it
the london does not last long after 2000+ level, unless you are playing for a draw your passive pyramid structure and development just wont do it. If both play solidly then its a draw it all advanced+ levels
to advance past 2100 they need to learn to play agressively and create imbalances and threats, caro as black and london as white just wont ever get you past a certain point. My friend on chess.com is 2000 and im on par with him because i create threats and play less passively. I believe that many people get to 2100 on playing super solid, passive like openings that get then to a level where they can gloat to their friends that their good when in reality they couldint beat many people who can play solidly and create threats and attacks. waiting for your oppoment to screw up and you finding a tactic wont last for long if you want to get better
however for beginners i would recommend e4 so you don't disintegrate when you play tactical games, but dont play all out tactical games. beginners should learn and play the scotch and vienna game for while. they aren't passive like the london, and can be tactical and are good due to them being open games and not slow and dry like others can be

Got to 2100 two tournaments ago. Was 1600 two year ago.
A drawish position does not equate to a drawn game. You simply have to keep the pressure on the opponent.
generally, d4 is great for beginner/low intermediate but eventually as your progress playing e4 gives more chance of winning. with more imbalances and chances for each side. regardless, d4 is generally less aggressive and not as many attacking chances for each side
