1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 : how should I deal with ...c5 ?

Hello.

As White I always start with 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 and then I play the Catalan.

But I would like to know how exactly I should meet …c5 on Black’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th move?

Basically there are four positions which I need to know how to deal with:

  • 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 c5
  • 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 e6 3. c4 c5
  • 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 e6 3. c4 Nf6 4. g3 c5
  • 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 e6 3. c4 Nf6 4. g3 dxc4 5. Bg2 c5

But my four answers against those four openings need to be in sync: I need to try to play the same thing against each one of them, in order to have a repertoire as economical as possible, and without getting move ordered out of my repertoire.

I would prefer positional, quiet, solid and strategic lines. Not sharp, aggressive and tactical lines.

But the lines also need to be objectively strong and played very often by Grandmasters.

So what lines would you recommend me against these four Black openings?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

c3 and play a reversed Slav if you want positional. c4 is more aggressive and transposes to a Tarrasch defense. e3 will probably give you more familiar positions but it's slightly less popular at GM level iirc

The first three points transpose into a Tarrasch defense. There are a lot of ways that White can play but I guess you should just play the g3 lines.

The fourth point looks like a Catalan but I don't really know the theory.

You can sort of ignore the first two and continue to play c4 as you normally would, whereupon you get an Austrian Defense in what I call the "Rubinstein Attack," which often (but not always) transposes into a Tarrasch Defense, as others noted. Even if it doesn't transpose, it's one of White's strongest moves there.

1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 c5 3. c4 =

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c5 3. Nf3

and

1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 e6 3. c4 c5 =

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c5 3. Nf3 e6

I'm unfamiliar with the Catalan/fianchetto versions.

TwoMove

1.Nf3 d5 2d4 c5 3c4 cxd4 is the only independent line to the Tarrasch in first three. 4cxd5 Nf6 and need to decide between Qxp Qxp or Nxp Nxp.
