12. a4?? In the Benko

I've been told there is a line that renders black defeated...

But I went ahead and started analyzing anyway.

It's beautiful this variation, with some of the richest ideas in the Benko to date, but I'd hardly say its a refutation. Also that's just how I would play it, for both sides.

EDIT: Clarified c4.

Surely the point of 12 a4 is not to prepare a kingside pawn attack but instead to ready 13 Nb5.

TheOldReb

The idea behind 12/13 a4 in the king walk variation of the benko is for white to build the ideal pawn structure on the qside in order to eliminate/or greatly reduce black's play/pressure there .
