What is this opening sequence called? And in your opinion does it have any merit for black after Nf6?

This is named Winawer gambit. Black has sounder ways to play.

Welcome to America...where garbage openings rule, and the players proudly express their aversion to actual study or sound play, thus dragging down any American title hopes with them.

Did an American invent this system?

True, but it's been played by top GMs, more than once. Personally, my problem with it is that it's not tactically rich enough to be really scary. The first time I faced it in a rated game was when a NM played it in a rapid (G/30) game. I neutralized his counter attack and got a good game, but was slightly behind on the clock and we ended up drawing.

I don't rate this as being as dangerous as the Chigorin or some other of Moro's openings.

It used to be popular at top level in the early 90s til the game Kasparov - Nikolic (which saw the improvements 6. Bd2 and fxe3). See Karpov - Bareev Linares 1992 (with Bareev's comments in Dvoretsky's Positional Play).
