I like the Tiger's Modern/a6 style.  The really (and I mean REALLY) basic ideas go something like this...

1.e4 g6

2.d4 Bg7

Now, if...

3.Nc3, then d6, intending 4...a6, 5...b5, and Bb7, Nbd7, and probably c5 all to come in short order.  The idea here is that this organizes queenside counterplay as quickly as possible, in order to combat the effectiveness of both 4.f4 Austrian type setups for white, as well as Be3/Qd2 English Attack style ones.

On the other hand, if...

3.Nf3, then d6, knowing full well that white has already given up the possiblility of 4.f4, and it's somewhat safer to enter a Pirc as black.  Black can then choose whether or not to continue 4...a6 depending on how white progresses.

If...

4.Nc3, then you can go ahead and play for quick queenside play with a6.

If...

4.Be2, then you can pretty safely go ahead with ...Nf6 and a pretty good classical Pirc.

If...

4.c4, then you have to decide whether you're willing to play a KID, or would rather go for some sideline.  (Say, 4...e5, e.g.)

In a general sense, it allows you to take away white's super-critical and super-theoretical lines, and steer them in directions of your own choosing, while allowing you to comfortably settle into lines that don't punish black as quickly.

That's not to say all those lines are necessarily better for black.  Lines where white plays 4.f4 are STILL going to be super critical.  But they won't be as booked up, in all likelihood, and should at least allow you to defend on your own terms.

(Oh, the other problem you face as black is that white has about a million other things he can do other than the obvious ones, and almost all of them will guarantee him at LEAST a small plus out of the opening, barring blunders, since your moves are so un-forcing.)

I disaggree! I think good development is the key to success. bad development is the key to losing. read : 'The Complete Chess Course'

You disagree with what?

One of main lines goes like that (up to permutation of moves):

rohan11

I have found out a line, which has been reccomended by a master who has won countless games with it. Just 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4. f4 e6

You should play this or a easy tiger variation which gives an equal game

Tiger's book on the modern is probably a good place to start if you'r interested in it, he goes through ideas, variations and various plans for both sides, aswell as concrete lines.

He took it from William Blake

  • Tiger tiger burning bright
  • In the forests of the night
  • What immortal hand or eye.
  • Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
