yes I agree that the Sicilian is good for a fighting chance against white, however there are people who think that they have an easy draw with the Berlin, so the KG is a nice suprise weapon against those people.

Great article man!!

jetfighter posted history and a lot of information and games about the Kings Gambit.  No need to troll here.  If you do not like it--don't play it,

Many people play and like the Kings Gambit.

The Kings Gambit gives interesting play With best play the game will be drawn if it is a Kings Gambit or a Sicilian. [or any sound opening]

Well said Ponz

I found this posting extremely worthwhile for both its historical overview and its examples (a few more Rudolf Spielmann games would have been nice).  While the KG may not give White as much as other openings, it never fails to give me an exciting game and that, pretty much, is what I really want out of a game of chess.

BirdsDaWord

Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it :D

Good ol' Santayana

Ben_Dubuque

Wow I honestly didn't expect this type of positive response. Thank you all and batgirl I would have added a few more spielmann games if I wasn't half delusional by the time I got there.... 2000+ games is too much to review in one sitting

batgirl

It wasn't a criticism, just a musing.

I have accepted the king's gambit multiple times against 2000+ players and won

Woo-hoo

It's impractical, you have far fewer chances of going wrong in a Giuco Piano or Ruy Lopez.  Apart from having more opening and middlegame leeway you aren't down a pawn in the endgame.  Granted some initiative may carry over in a king's gambit ending and white can exchange pawns down to increase drawing chances (and a black g4 pawn is an overextented clear target for white usually) but why pick an opening where you'll have to fight hard for a draw in the endgame with plenty of chances to go wrong beforehand?

When someone is playing White in a gambit accepted in general he is not playing to exchange pawns or pieces. Also White is not playing for an endgame where he is a pawn down but can hold.

In fact exchanging pieces or pawns in general will not often lead to a draw-it will usually lead to a loss.

Yes, you have fewer chances to go wrong in something like the Giuco Piano but there are also  fewer chances for Black to go wrong.

by playing KG you risk your slight advantage as white. QG is better. But I only believe this because I am a good defender and positional player and not such an attacking player. If you are really good at attacking, then the KG will probably work for you

This is a more moderate and realistic statement.  However in any opening you risk your slight advantage as White.

no that''s actually not true, unless you play inaccurate moves. The KG creates so many complications that it is impossible to claim any advantage. That is why black has 43% compared to white's 38% in the king's gambit accepted.

Ajian, take note that Ponz has been a CC champion in the past and has a much higher rating than his live rating suggests.  I think he knows a bit about the openings.

um actually its more like a 45 for white and 38 for Black According to my primary source chessgames.com

you have to look at multiple sources before deciding upon your conclusion.

White has chances in the KG but they are very difficult to use

They are difficult for you to use as [as you stated] you are more of a positional player and not so good in tactics.  Don't let your own situation be projected on to others?

There are players who love to play the Kings Gambit.

They probably do considerably better than just the players who happen to play the Kings Gambit in 1 or 2 games.

Anytime you specialize in one opening you will do better than the over all stats for that opening.

[the bullet rating on here are not for my games-I do not play bullet at all]

look at my newest blog [made today] for an example of how knowing one opening very well results in extra wins in that opening.
