A name of that opening (1. b4 a5)

Hello!

Unfortunately there is no official name for the following line of the Sokolsky (Polish) Opening: 1. b4 a5.

I wonder what would be a better name for it? I am going to create a blog post about it, but I don't know what to call it.

If you have any ideas on how to name this opening - please let me know Cool I would very appreciate your ideas!

A00 : monkey patzer's game seems appropriate.

1. ... a5 answer to 1. b4 is sound. 2. b5 is almost forced and black may try to explore it later.

White will have to play b5 at some point anyways once the e pawn moves, otherwise b4 is lost. So why not develop ?

I would be happy if so, however there are already 76 games with this line in game explorer. Who was the first one to play this defense is a mystery I guess.

Eugen

Whether an immediate 1... a5 is sound or not is another question which is to be debatable. What is more important now is to invent an appropriate name for it.

I used to play 1. .. a5 in rapid games to avoid a prepared line. I don't think it is good or better than the mainline , but now white has to start thinking and I am attacking a pawn and threaten to open my a-file.

A name : "The chimp"

I thought 1.b4 was called the orang-oetan (holland) or Larsen-opening.

But isn't this name pejorative (or humiliating) for 1... a5? I think it deserves smth more than being a monkey move.

Eugen

I think I've found some clue.

For example, 1.e4 a5 is called "Ware Defense" (as well as Corn Stalk defense) in honour of Preston Ware who liked irregular openings. 1. a4 also carries the name of Ware opening (as well as Meadow Hay opening).

I think calling 1. b4 a5 "The Sokolsky Opening: Ware Defense" would not be a mistake.

"King Kong" defense of the Abe-Shit opening

Accelerated Bayonet attack (taken from the 9.b4 a5 line in KID)

Thanks for this idea. However it is a b4 move which is called "Bayonet", not a5. I don't  think we have the right to convert a Bayonet attack into Bayonet defense.

And here comes again the question of soundness.

Actually, 1. b4 c6!? 2. Bb2 a5! is not bad for black. After 3. a3, I think the best line is 3... axb4 4. axb4 Rxa1 5. Bxa1 Qb6, and the white position looks horrible

Eugen

I think if even professional chess players use 1. b4 in their official tournaments it is sound enough. Not to say about us - the amateurs.

That's why it is better for White to play 3. b5!?
