a strange opening - why not hit the knight

Hi everybody! Browsing through the gameexplorer I found the following opening:

1. e4 c5

2.Nf3 d6

3.Nd4

hitting the knight seems to be invitable but the four times the opening happended all  players refused to do so. So it must be a trap, right? But I can't see the point. Maybe I am just blind, but I would apriciate any help at this. Or maybe I am a genius, seeing a move everybody else missed ... lol.

Serious. they all had a reason. What can it be? Thanks.

I'm sure that 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 is what actually happened, but somewhere the 3rd moves were lost. These moves are often made a tempo, and then people sometimes forget to write them down...

Well, that is really a plausible answer. UNfortunatly I watched the four games and in three of them the pawns on d4 and c5 appear later on, sometimes through an move of there own or through a notation that they were hit, which shouldn't be there when the figure which moved there moved to an empty field, right? So when it is about the notation its not the move you mentioned that is missing. Anyway ... probably you are right in the direction ... hm...
