Anti Catalan

Can anyone recommend me a course for playing against the Calatlan? I'd say it's the opening I have most problem with black.

I'm trying to decide if I go for the closed or the open. I think I likely prefer the closed as in the open you seem to have to be prepared to exchange sacrifice the rook. Exchange sacrifice for long term not something I have any expereience with. Maybe something I need to learn.

EDIT: Looking at this more it seems its the pseudo catalan I face as I play the slav as black. I've noticed the open catalan's assume a quick e6

Thanks

What do you play as Black?

Nimzo-Indian or QGD?

Most black repertoire books for black cover the Catalan from Black's perspective.

For example, if you play he Tartakower Variation or Lasker's Variation of the Queen's Gambit declined, John Cox's book Declining the Queen's Gambt is a little dated but very good, and hecklers the Catalan.

Same with a Nimzo book by I forget who, red cover by Everyman written in the mid-2010s.

Another really old book from 1996, beating the flank openings, is really a book on beating 2 openings. The English and the Catalan.

There are plenty of sources. You just have to look at your local chess store. Chess4less or USCFSALES in the US, chess and bridge in Europe, etc. Also Amazon.

I play the Slav as black, just realized i's badged as the pseudo catalan. It's not the mainline Catalan which I guess I will never face playing the Slav but maybe the Slav can transpose into the closed Catalan?

I've got the Move by Move on the Slav but I can't see anywhere the pseduo catalan, they cover the Kings Indian version where whites pawn is on c3. I'll keep looking, thanks.

Assuming you are talking about something like this (since you play the Slav)

Which is, well, still a Slav, but in some lines it can turn into a Catalan; if you want to avoid the Catalan all together just play something like this:

Yes thanks. I think the problem is I've been playing Bf5 before c6 so cannot get the queen to the b file. I see now my move order is inaccurate.
