Learning how to play the Bird has been somewhat of a pet project of mine since about 2 months ago. I normally go with the system that goes 1.f4, 2.Nf3, 3.e3, 4.Be2 and then fianchettoing the queen's Bishop.
I've had mixed success with it, but it's quite fun to play. I managed to even beat my coach with it recently.
Pretty much the only game of the Bird I didn't play OTB so far. He played the opening surprisingly well considering his low rating, but unfortunately made mistakes in the middle game.
I play the Bird but for flexibility’s sake have also experimented with a “delayed Bird” where black plays N-c6 allowing the B-b5 pin which is a reversed Nimzo-Indian where white is a tempo up & has a much firmer grip on e5 (from the King Knight & f4 pawn). White often gets a crushing K-side attack or an enduring space advantage in the endgame.
I've occasionally played it in OTB or postal games. Counting up the games i still have a record of i find that my % a bit better than i remember it (69% from 13 games against mostly 'intermediate club players' like myself) - even better than the Dutch!
