i have played some and i got some advantages with that.

Thanks,

Joel.

The reason why you can't find any mentions is because they are clearly bad.

You're dithhhhhpicable!

yeah.. and also if we can bring the rook early into the open[easiest way is through the pawn opening in front of it], as a supportive/center taking strategy(along with a castle on the other side, it may be a deadly[not suicidal ;P] combination?), it can work well also i think.

i havent got chance to test it much with a good player though. so any thoughts on this would be welcome.. if anyone is interested, we could discuss such openings here.

Moving the edge pawn very early can be good!

No no no!  You have not kept up to date with Grob theory!  2.Bg2? has been long condemned as a move that leads to a poor position for white.

Better is my move 2.e3! which allows flexibility before the development of the light square bishop.  Note that 2...h5 here is not as strong as white can just play 3.gxh5!

Great, you defeated a 1200+. Bwahahahahahahaha.

Ok, let me put it this way. Your rooke's pawn opening managed to outrun a puppy. With no legs. Which was stuck in a ditch. And dead.

the earliest time masters move a rook pawn in a real mainstream opening(that I know of) is in a kasparov-petrosian queen's indian.

c6 e6

Nf3 b6

Just for fun You can open with the rook pawn to waste a tempo and then play reversed colors Ex: the White Scandinavian

Larsen opening. The rest of 'em you can keep, I don't want 'em. :)

I like your idea but with 4.Qd3 as in the Scandinavian with ..Qd6 the move ..a6 is nearly always played.

Is there an opening vs d5 where white a3 is useful?

Avatar of birdboy1

nope, after a3 d5, a3 is purely a time waster and possibly even a move weakening the queenside.

actually maybe playing a tarrasch defense with an IQP might make it more useful.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Tony Miles' famous victory against Karpov using the St George Defence!  Here it is, with comments from chessgames.com
