People are always supprise to find out I play chess often. Weather because it goes against their own stereotypes of it being 'a game for dull peaople' or its just not a common passtime for younger people.

I've heard the, "YOU play chess?!" surprised expressions because, I have a vagina. Apparently it's a strike against me

I bet you score alot better against straight guys and lesbians over the board though.Tongue out

I'm not really sure if "straight guys", and girls, are a myth or not? But that could be, because I work in restaurantsLaughing

BTW...I was just joking about most chess players being dorks.

Of course that's not true!

DrSpudnik

People who accuse chess players of being bores are usually upset because the chess players are not interacting with them. Social butterflies and the terminally insecure  require the constant validation of others around them. So if a game is more interesting than they are, the game must be attacked until it is ushered off stage.

You may want to consider using this word next time:

boor  (br)

n.
1. A person with rude, clumsy manners and little refinement.
2. A peasant.

[Dutch boer, from Middle Dutch gheboer; see bheu- in Indo-European roots.]
Synonyms: boor, barbarian, churl, lout1, vulgarian, yahoo
These nouns denote an uncouth and uncultivated person: listened to the boor talk about himself all night; a barbarian bewildered by the art exhibit; offended by the churl's lack of manners; was married to an uncaring lout; refused to invite the vulgarian; acted like a yahoo at the restaurant.

However, bore is correct. I just think boor does a better job of capturing your intent. Many times people use the word bore thinking that they mean boor.

bore 2  (bôr, br)

tr.v. bored, bor·ing, bores
To make weary by being dull, repetitive, or tedious: The movie bored us.
n.
One that is wearingly dull, repetitive, or tedious.

[Origin unknown.]

No, if you are one of them... I'm sure if you don't play, listening to a bunch of people discuss the relative merits of the sicillian defense is no fun.

The thing I have found weird about a lot of chess players is how much like teenage girls they are. Any chess organization I've seen, from local to the USCA, has been riddled with silly little rivalries and political garbage. I've seen two clubs in a not that big city hold tournaments on the same day just to spite each other. Its sad really, there are not enough chess people in most places to have divisions like that. Its too bad people can't be mature for the good of the game.

Chess players aren't Bores... they are Crazeys

This is true of every organization, everywhere.

In the land where I hail, people associate playing chess with having brains. however, when you put your ear to the ground, people are saying, "chess players are bores." I wonder whether it is the fear of playing the game or the hardship in learning it. I assumed that some people are not patient and consider playing chess either a bore or a game of the brilliant minds.

My dearest friends say, "chess players are social bores." " How can one sit and play a game for more than 30 minutes and still stay normal with no serious communication apart from that with the board and the person they are playing with."

Should we the chess players be considered genuis or extreme bores of many generations? What is your take on this?

Expert-level chess requires some serious complex mental work. Master chess players don't just play one move -- in their head, they consider all possible moves they could make, what their opponent would do in response, what move they could make after that, etc. and run through it all statistically, deciding what moves would produce the most benefit for them, what they can sacrifice to gain the upper hand. Not many people have that capacity. It really takes a sharp mind .One of the highest IQ is world World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov. He is alleged to have an IQ of 190. Then, World Chess Champion Judith Polgar is alleged to have an IQ of 170.

I'm watching the Cubs play St. Louis right now  - it's 4-4 in the seventh, and I'm enjoying a deep dish Dominoes pizza along with a strawberry daiquiri.  As some of you are aware, I am a large man; 5'9, 410 lbs.  Being a tad tipsy right now, I would say it's not chess players who are boring, it's people under 40.  They're intellectual urchins. They have nothing to say because they have never lived life.  I've been married two and a half times and have two kids who hate my guts and I can't stand them either.  Although I am currently worth over seven figures, I filed bankruptcy once and had a bypass four years ago.  I go to therapy once a week and drink a lot too.  So, in answer to your question, I think only well established people have gifted personalities and since most chess players are under 40, they are boring.

Carefully acquitted,

.....and yet, you seem to be completely unabashed by your situation and quality of life. I marvel at anyone who can smile through the tears so convincingly. Bravo.

Haywood, you truly crack me up Laughing. I can't help but wonder, though, if you are Ivandh. He has a similar kind of humor, although his forte is mostly posting photos and one liners.

Anyway, keep up the good work. I'm just a beginner, and I still have pimples, but so far I think chess is for goofballs. I could be mistaken, but that's how it's starting to shape up.

P.S.: I am a skinny anorexic and wish I could be a rich fatso chess champeen, like you. You are my idol.

Perhaps chessplayers just refuse to have a battle of wits with unarmed people. Hence they seem boring.SmileUndecided

Yes. In fact, my period has nothing to do with the game...unless I lose and become abusiveLaughing

Talking to anyone about something they aren't interested in is boring.

Example #1: talking about cycling on a chess site.

Example #2: talking about chess on a cycling site.
